Abstract

Regulating.-A windmill is normally held in the wind by a device acting with maximum force when the rotor is fully in the wind, but with decreasing force as the rotor is automatically turned-out of the wind at high wind speeds. As shown in Fig. 2, an electric generator 4 driven by a two-bladed screw propeller 5 is secured on a platform 1 which turns on a shaft at a rear corner and has hinged thereto a tail vane 9 controlled by spring means which comprise a spring 12 connected to an arm 19 on the platform 1 and to a sliding member 15 on the tail vne frame 6, which sliding member 15 is controlled by a spring 11. The effect is that when the platform 1 has turned a certain amount out of the wind the combined restoring effect of the springs 11, 12 is reduced due to the springs aligning. An auxiliary spring device comprising a sliding bolt 26 on the platform abutting on a plate 29 on the vane frame returns the platform when the wind falls. A buffer spring 31 threaded over and secured at one end to a chain 30 by which the windmill is manually put out of the wind prevents the windmill being jerked into the wind by gusts. The tail vane is formed with a hinged panel 10 which can be clamped in any desired position on brackets 35. The control mechanism can be adjusted by varying the points of connection of the 'springs 11, 12.
