Abstract

217,485. Zucker, G. F. Oct. 8, 1923. Current motors; regulating.-A windmill has a rotatable vertical shaft 20 which supports horizontal planes 24, 26, 32 between which are blades 40, 42, 44 hinged radially to the planes 26, 26, 24 respectively. Angular stops prevent the blades from swinging beyond the vertical position when they are in position for the wind to operate, but during the feathering action they swing to the planes and may be latched in position. The latches are held on by springs and hold the blades out of action unless released by means of the handles 86, 94, 98. Each blade has an arm with an adjustable counterweight 60 to enable it to deal with any wind pressure. Safety supplemental (doors 62 are hinged at openings in the blades and are held closed by adjustable compression springs 66 which permit the doors to open when the pressure on the blades becomes excessive. In a modification the blades axe replaced by frames with a grid structure 116, Figs. 8 and 9 the frames being secured by hinges 115 to the planes. The front face of the grid is flat while the rear face forms part of a cylindrical surface and is provided with hinged doors 124, 126, 128, 130, having adjustable restraining springs 132. The wind thus enters a series of passages before reaching the doors. To collect wind for the active side and to deflect it from the feathering side, the apparatus shown in Fig. 11 is employed. It swings on a part 150 and has vanes 152 which cause it to take up a position with the open end 154 pointing towards the wind. The open end has an extension 158 which protects the feathering side of the windmill from the wind; the end contains three air passages, one 142 directs air on to the blade 42 the second 144 directs air on to the blade 44, and the third 140 directs air on to the Made 40.
