Abstract

303,585. Browdy, M. W. Oct. 15, 1927. B u o y a n swimming and bathing dresses. - Relates to swimming costumes &c. having separate inflatable chambers around the chest and back of the wearer. According to the invention a bathing-dress comprises two thicknesses of material around the chest and/or back which form a compartment having an opening 3 through which inflatable chambers can be inserted or withdrawn. The inner or outer thickness of material may be non-distendable. The inflatable chambers may be of rubber, rubberized fabric, oiled silk or other suitable material. Tapes 4 &c. are provided for closing the opening 3. A valve-controlled tube is provided for inflating the chambers and passes through a hole in the front centre of the dress and enclosed in a pocket thereon. Undue distortion of the chambers may be prevented by securing the inner and outer walls together at spaced points. The inflatable chambers may be encircled by strengthening bands and shaped to conform to the shape of the wearer. The centre of buoyancy of the chambers is towards the front so that the costume would float an unconscious person face upwards.
