Abstract
303,474. Defays, V. J. J., and Lefebvre, P. J. L. Jan. 4, 1928, [Convention date]. Driving-arrangements. -A centrifugal clutch arranged within a pulley J, comprises free massive balls B acting to separate converging surfaces of revolution S<1>, S<2>, of which the surface S<1> is on the cone clutch member P, directly driven by a motor while the surface S<2> is carried by the loose pulley J, provided with a coacting clutch cone F<2>. The cone clutch may be replaced by a disc clutch. The surface S<2> may, as shown, be the plane face of a cover-plate C secured in the pulley J. A disengaging-spring R acts to balance the balls at low speed. The clutch is particularly applicable to facilitating the starting of motors under load, as the balls B initially lag by inertia and then roll on the surfaces S<1>, S<2> at a speed intermediate between those of the driving and driven parts, so exerting little friction and less than the maximum centrifugal force, while considerable overload is required to cause slip on full engagement. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect 91 (3) (a) comprises also statements that the masses B may be spheres of the same or different diameters, rollers, conical frusta, or other solids of revolution, and that they may be held spaced apart but independent of the driving- member. When applied to the clutch shown, the driven part J, instead of being a pulley, may be connected by coupling-pins G to a flange P<2> on a driven shaft A<2>. A second member P and pair of cones may be provided in place of the cover C, one member P being axially slidable, and clutches of types other than cone and disc may be used. The clutch is stated to be particularly applicable for use with short-circuited asynchronous electromotors. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
