Chloracetic acid.-Acetic acid is chlorinated bv treatment with dry chlorine at a temperature of less than 30‹ C. in the presence of one or more halogen compounds and/or one or more anhydrides of the lower fatty acids. Examples are given of the chlorination of glacial acetic acid in the presence of trichloracetic acid or acetic, propionic, butyric or valeric anhydride, or acetic anhydride and trichloracetic acid combined.
