Abstract
Acid halides of the general formula <FORM:0744804/IV(a)/1> where n = 1 or 2 and Hlg is a halogen atom are made by treating the corresponding alpha hydro-beta hydroxy acid with a halogenating agent capable of converting a carboxylic acid into its acid halide to cause halogenation with removal of water to give the alpha unsaturated acid halide. The halogenation is preferably effected by phosphorus trichloride, phosphorus pentachloride, phosphorus tribromide or thionyl chloride in benzene, toluene or xylene at 50 DEG to 70 DEG C. or in chloroform at -50 DEG to 0 DEG C. In examples (1) beta-ionol acetic acid ethyl ester is saponified and the resulting beta-ionol acetic acid is treated with phosphorus trichloride to give beta ionylidene acetic acid chloride; and (2) the hydroxy C20 acid ethyl ester, prepared from the C18 ketone by Reformatsky, is saponified and treatd with phosphorus pentachloride to give Vitamin A acid chloride.
