Abstract
302,531. Gammell, Laird, & Co., Ltd., and Bailey, A. S. April 11, 1928. Operating doors by weights.-Railway wagon doors are provided with at least one pair of cam members formed of hard wear-resisting steel, the cam members being located at a position remote from the door hinges, which are adapted to permit of the rising movement produced by the engaging cams as the door is moved. The door is mounted on hinges having a socket member 4 adapted to slide on a pivot pin 3 against the action of a spring 9, as shown in Fig. 4. At a position remote from the hinges, cam members 14, 10 are respectively secured to the door and door frame members, so that as the door is opened it is lifted by the member 14 travelling up the incline 11, the door closing automatically when released. The incline 11 may be duplicated so that when the door opens through more than 90‹ the cam member 14 travels automatically down the other incline, the door swinging freely into a position parallel with the side of the wagon. The surfaces 11 may have abrupt extensions 15 so as to offer an additional resistance to the initial part of the opening and closing movement of the door. A ball or roller may be fitted between the cam surfaces.
