(01.716-136) .The invention relates to hinges for automobile doors or other swingable members and more particularly to hinges of the concealed type.
.-' .An object of the invention is to provide a 5 strong and durable hinge capable of economical manufacture and having a rolling support to secure easy action and to reduce wear, there being arcuate grooves for rollable members so arranged as to facilitate machining operations and entry 10 of the rollable members.
Anotherobject of the invention is to provide a hinge having resilient means for retaining a rollable bearing member in engagement with a raceway.
15 A further object of the invention is to provide a hinge having a pair of bearing members spaced axially thereof and so arranged as to resist relative tilting. of the hinge members incident to looseness at the pintle.
The invention further consists in the several features hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawing, l5 designates the door post or 4.5 jamb of an automobile body, and IS a door occupying a doorway I! in the body. The door post I5 is covered at its outer and inner sides by respective panels l8 and I9, respectively, and the door I6 is similarly faced with outer and inner 50 panels 20 and 2|, respectively. The outer door panel 20 has a weather flange 22 which overlies the edge of the body panel l8 when the door is closed, as seen in Fig. 2.
The door is supported by two or more hinges 55 embodying the invention, one being shown. In
that form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 5, the door post has a cavity 23 formed therein to receive a stationary hinge member or casing 24, which is provided with upper andlower flanges 25 let into the door post and secured thereto by 5 screws 26. At least one of the flanges 25 may be extended, as indicated, to constitute a part of a similar hinge member of another hinge, not shown, to ithus facilitate alignment and to strengthen and form part of the door post. The hinge member 24 has spaced parallel cheeks 21 connected at portions distant from the flanges 25 by a wall 28 and forming therewith a recess '29 which opens at the doorway. A forwardly projecting hinge knuckle 30 is carried on the wall 28 midway between the cheeks. The wall 28 is here'shown to include an angular portion 31 at the side nearest the inner body panel l9; A movable hinge member 32 has a hooked portion 33 fitting between the cheeks 21 of the stationary hinge member,the hinge member 32 having opposite parallel faces 34 adjacent these cheeks. The hooked portion has a pair of spaced hinge knuckles 35 which fit between the knuckle and the cheeks 21 and are secured thereto by a pintle 36 fast to the stationary hinge member, the pintle being arranged near one side edge of the stationary hinge member and between theopen front and the rear wall of the latter hinge 30 member. The movable hinge member has a flange 3'! which is let into the door and secured thereto by screws 38. The flange 31 may be extended, if desired, to forinpart of another similar hinge member, in the same manner as the flange on the stationary hinge member.
a When the door is closed, the hinged edge thereof lies adjacent the edge of the door post l5, and the weather flange 22 lies close to the body panel IS. The extreme opening movement of the door 40 is limited,-as seen in .Fig. 3, by'the engagement of a recess'e'dlportio'n ofthe movable hinge member with a 'stop pin 39 connecting the cheeks 21 and disposed between the pintle and the front opening of the stationary hinge member. The stop pin 39 and pintle 36 are fastened to the cheeks in any suitable manner, as by a drive fit. In the open position of the door, the hinge member 32 extends only a small distance into the doorway and has no projection on which clothing may catch. The open door does not appreciably reduce the effective width of the doorway.
The inner faces of the cheeks 21 are provided with arcuate grooves or tracks 40 concentric with the axis of the pintle 36. Both ends of the tracks open at the outer side edges of the cheeks provided. with arcuate grooves or tracks 4| and 42; respectively, registering with the grooves 40. Rollable'members 43 and 44, preferably balls,
' are mounted in the upper and lower; grooves to roll therealong when the door is swung, and are entered into the cheek grooves" 40, during assembly, at the 'open ends of these grooves. The lower ball 44 resists both axial-and radial thrust on the hinge. The upper ball rolls on aniarcu- 7 .ate trackway plate 45 mounted inithe groove 4| and pressed'upwardly by resil'ient'mean's such as f ii a. corrugated metal spring strip 46 below the plate, so as to urge the balI 43 'upwar'dly against the upper cheek groove40, thereby compensating for wear and variations in] manufacturel The upperj balliresists radial thrust on the hinge.

The ends of the cheek grooves are concealed by the body panel I8.

Movement of the hingevmember in a 'radial direction isresisted' by'both balls 43 and 44, thus relievingthe pintle of most of the radial load.
