Abstract

302,375. Marks, E. C. R., (Corn Products Refining Co.). Aug. 15, 1927. Liquids, treating; electric endosmose. - Impurities comprising colloids and metallic compounds in starch converted dextrose solutions are removed by electrolysis and osmosis in cells provided with porous partitions, the colloids and hydroxides of the metals being separated out at the cathode and the acid radicles of the metallic compounds migrating to the anode, thus reducing the acidity of the solution in the cathode compartment and promoting further coagulation of the colloids therein. The process is applicable to liquors at any stage in the conversion, mother liquids obtained from centrifuges &c., mixtures and remelts. In one arrangement, Fig. 2, the liquor is fed through pipes 29, 30 to anode and cathode compartments 26, 25, baffles 33, 34 and overflows 31, 32 being provided. The liquids issuing from the compartments are filtered and' that from the anode compartments may be neutralized or added to liquors of low acidity for reconversion.
