Abstract

301,542. Kimber, W. E. Sept. 2, 1927. Angular bending; mandrels.- A pivoted sweep-arm bender comprises a circular grooved former and a planetarily moving grooved quadrant, of radius materially greater than the radius of the former, pivoted on the sweep arm. A tube, rod &c. to be bent is gripped in the vice m and is held between the groove in a circular former a and the abutting groove of a large radius quadrant l by screwing the lever g<2> which presses the slider h and, through the quadrant pin i, presses the quadrant forward so that when the lever g<2> is pulled round the whole travels about the stud c and the quadrant l rolls on the former a and bends the tube. The quadrant is slotted at k to allow for advance and retraction, and the fulcrum pin i is mounted in the slider h. Attached to the lever is a plate p<2> adjustably carrying a grooved roller to engage the tube ahead of the quadrant. The vice may be adjustably secured to a carrier q which if freed can pivot about an adjustable rod r, Fig. 2, to an extent allowed by the adjustment of one end of a chain v, in holes, the other end being fixed to a sprocket wheel u revolubly mounted on the stud, and turning with the lever g<2>. To bend slotted tubes a flexible strip of metal n, Fig. 5 is inserted in the slot, and the grooves in the former and quadrant are modified accordingly.
