My present invention relates to devices for bending sheet metal.
It is an object of my present invention to provide a combined vise and bending arrangement which is simple in construction and easy to operate.
The novel features which are considered as characteristic for the invention are set forth in particular in the appended claims. The invention itself, however, both as to its construction and its method of operation, together with additional objects and advantages thereof, will be best understood from the following description of specific embodiments when read in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a transverse section through a bending device according to my present invention; and
Fig. 2 is a side view of the bending device shown in Figure l. l
The bending device according to my present invention includes the stationary channel shaped member I having flanges 2 and 3 which are apertured to receive guide rods 4. These rods are secured to and carry the movable jaw 5 of the vise. A screw 6 and screw operating means I are provided for opening and closing the vise.
Mounted on the channel shaped member I is a stationary jaw 8. To the upper part of this jaw 8 is secured the vise jaw 9 having a bending edge 9,
Mounted on the above described jaw assembly are pivots Iii carrying the bending means which are composed of the bending beam H and the former l2 firmly secured to beam i I by screw 13. The pivots H] are arranged so that the former i2 and beam H are turnable about an axis coinciding substantially with the bending edge 9 of the vise jaw 91.
It should be noted that former i2 is also provided with a bending edge 52 which faces and is located adjacent to the bending edge 9 of the vise jaw 9.
To the movable jaw 5 is secured the angle member M which in turn carries the movable vise jaw i5 provided with the bending edge [5 arranged so as to be adapted to meet the bending edge 9 of the stationary vise jaw 9 and the bending edge E2 of the former l2 when the vise is closed.
At the lower part of the stationary jaw 8 is mounted a spacing member H; of the same thickness as the vise jaw 9.
Upon the former I2 is placed a spacing sheet member I! serving as a stop gage. This spacing sheet member 11 is adjusted by means of the screw l8 which extends through the depending leg 19 of the spacing sheet member I! and engages the tapped hole 2c of the bending beam l l. The nut 2| is adjustable along the screw l8 and. serves for firmly holding the depending leg 15 from further outward movement from the adjusted position of sheet member H.
The inverted channel 22 serves as holding member and is releasably secured by screw 53 to the bending beam ll.
During operation, the work piece e. g. sheet of metal to be bent, will be inserted from the front between the. former l2 and the channel 22 serving as holding member until it abuts against the front edge of the spacing sheet member ll which is located between the holding member 22 and the former l2 spaced from thebending edge of the latter.
After insertion of the work piece into the slot formed between the former and the holding member, the vise is closed and the former is turned 7 about the pivots Hl by manually grasping and turning the downwardly depending leg of the bending beam l I which will then serve as means 5 for swinging the former [2 toward and over the bending edge [5' of the vise jaw 15, resulting in bending of the work piece.
What I claim is:
l. A device for bending sheet metal, including the combination, with a stationary jaw having guide holes extending transversely through the same and adapted tobe mounted on asta-tionary support, of guide rods extending slidably'through the guide holes; a movable jaw rigidly mounted on the guide rods at one end thereof and slidable therewith; a movable vise jawhaving a bending edge and fixed on said movable jaw at a portion thereof facing said stationary jaw, slidably together with said movable jaw; corresponding screw and thread means operable to slide said guide rods in said guide holes and thereby move said movable jaw together with said movable vise jaw toward and from said stationary jaw, at will; a stationary vise jaw having a bending edge and fixed on said stationary jaw at a portion. thereof facing said movable Vise jaw; a former having a bending edge; pivoting means hingedly connecting said former to said stationary vise jaw with its bending edge disposed along the. bending edge of the latter jaw; and means for swinging the former forward and over said movable vise jaw during operation.
2. A device for bending sheet metal, including the combination, with a stationary jaw having guide holes extending transversely through the same and adapted to be mounted on a stationary support, of guide rods extending slidably through the guide holes; a movable vise jaw having a bending edge and being rigidly mounted on the guide rods at one end thereof and slidable therewith; corresponding screw and thread means operable to slide said guide rods in said guide holes and thereby move the movable vise jaw toward and from said stationary jaw, at will; a stationary vise jaw having a bending edge and fixed on said stationary jaw at a portion thereof facing said movable vise jaw; a former having a bending edge; pivoting means hingedly connecting the former to said stationary vise jaw with its bending edge disposed along the bending edge of the latter jaw; means for swinging the former toward and over the movable vise jaw during operation; a releasable holding member mounted on top of said former and spaced above the latter; and a spacing sheet member serving as a stop gage disposed between said holding member and said former with one edge located between said holding member and said former spaced from the bending edge of the latter.

A device for bending sheet metal, including the combination, with a stationary jaw of a movable jaw; supporting means supporting said movable jaw slidably toward and from said stationary jaw; a movable vise jaw having a bending edge and fixed on said movable jaw at a portion thereof facing said stationary jaw, slidably together with said movable jaw; operating means for sliding said movable jaw together with said movable vise jaw on said supporting means toward and from said stationary jaw, at will; a stationary vise jaw having a bendin edge and fixed on said stationary jaw at a portion thereof facing said movable vise jaw; a former having a bending edge; pivoting means hingedly connecting said former to said stationary vise jaw with its bending edge disposed along the bending edge 1 the latter jaw; and means for swinging the former forward and over said movable vise jaw durin operation.
4 A device for bending sheet metal, including the combination, with a stationary jaw of a movable jaw; supporting means supporting said movable jaw slidably toward and from said stationary jaw; a movable vise jaw having a bending edge and fixed on said movable jaw at a portion thereof facing said stationary jaw, slidably together with said movable jaw; operating means for sliding said movable jaw together with said movable vise jaw on said supporting means toward and from said stationary jaw, at will; a stationary vise jaw having a bending edge and fixed on said stationary jaw at a portion thereof facing said movable vise jaw; a former having a bending edge; pivoting means hingedly con necting said former to one of said vise jaws with its bending edge disposed along the bending edge of said jaw; and means for swinging the former forward and over the other vise jaw during operation.
5. A device for bending sheet metal, including in combination, a stationary vise jaw having a bending edge; a movable vise jaw having also a bending edge and arranged facing said stationary vise jaw; supporting means supporting said movable vise jaw slidably toward and from said stationary vise jaw; operating means for sliding said movable vise jaw on said supporting means toward and from said stationary vise jaw at will; a former having a bending edge; pivoting means hingedly connecting said former to one of said vise jaws with its bending edge disposed along the bending edge of said jaws; and means for swinging the forwer forward and over the other vise jaw durin operation.
