A TTURNEYS BAND IRON STOCK WORKING TOOL WITH A TWIST DEVICE THEREON This invention relates to a band metal stock cutting, punching, bending and twisting tool and more particularly to the twisting device provided upon the tool.
It is the principal object of the present invention to provide a band stock twisting device that is utilizable with a metal cutting, bending and punching tool having handle parts for effecting the operation of the same which can serve to clamp the band stock piece while fitted to a stock twist device thereon in which after the stock piece has been twisted therebetween the stock twisting device may not be disassembled from the tool in order to release the twisted band stock piece therefrom.
It is another object of the invention to provide a simple and releasable means for holding twisting cylinder part of the stock piece twisting device upon a work too] for rotation thereupon wherein the twisting handle may engage a vertical guiding edge when effecting the twisting of the stock work piece.
It is another object of the invention to provide a limit stop means for the handle of the band stock twisting device of the work tool that can be adjusted to limit the twisting movement depending upon the springiness of the work material.
Other objects of the invention are to provide .a bandstock twisting device for work tools, having the above objects in mind, which is of simple construction, has a minimum number of parts, rugged and durable and adapted to withstand twisting stresses, easy to maintain and operate, effective and efficient in operation.
For a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
FIG. 1 is a side elevational view of the band metal stock cutting and twisting tool, embodying the features of the present invention.
FIG. 2 is a side elevational view of this cutting and twisting tool as viewed from the opposite side of the tool from that shown in FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a top plan view of the cuttingand twisting tool with band metal stock extended through the twist ing device with a twisting operation having been performed upon the metal stock.

In FIGS. 1 to 4 there is shown generally composite bandmetal stock cutting, punching, bending and twisting tool with which all of these operations can be effected upon band metal stock of given flat shape and thickness, these operations being effected by different parts of the tool in which three of the operations are effected by operating the same extending handles 15 and 16, in which the upper of these handles 16 is lifted from the lower handle 15 and upon bringing the bent upper handle 16 so that its elbow 17 will engage the top of the lower handle 15, any of these operations will have been effected depending upon where the band metal stock is applied to the forward portions of the tool. The lower handle 15 has a depending and laterally extending support portion 18 by which the tool can be fixed to the top surface of a work bench 19 by fastening screws 21. The forward portion of lower handle 15 has an enlarged bifurcated portion with the usual spaced upper and lower punching jaws 22 and 23, with the upper jaw 22 having a punch 24 slidably operated in a bore therein. The band metal stock that is extended between the jaws and as the upper handle 16 is pivoted at 27 to parallel and vertically extending links 28 rack teeth 29 on the end of the handle 16 will work upon rack teeth 31 of a link 32 pivoted on a pivot pin 33 carried on the upper part of the handle 16 and extending forwardly and engaging with punch pin 24 to force the same through the metal stock.
Upper and lower cutting jaws 34 and 35, the upper jaw being pivoted at 36' to the forward end of the lower handle 15 is worked by the same racked link 32 to effect a cutting operation of bar stock placed between these cutting jaws 34 and 35. The lower ends of the parallel links 28 are pivotally connected by a pin 37 to the forward jaw portion of the lower handle 15. If it is desired to effect a bending operation upon band metal stock, the metal stock is placed over a female die member 38 and as the handle 16 is brought downwardly over the top side of the band metal stock, the metal stock will be bent into the female die 38.
All .of this construction is shown in my US. Pat. No. 3,087,242, issued Apr. 30, 1963. This patent also included a seat 39 on the upper face of the lower handle 15 into which a bar 41 is seated to be clamped by link 32 as the handle 16 is brought downwardly against the handle 15 so that upon engaging a laterally extending portion of the band metal stock, the band metal stock could be twisted to any desired degree and thereafter the twisted band metal would have its untwisted portion drawn laterally outwardly from the tool, the twisting operation having been completed upon the band metal stock. In such construction shown in the previous patent the twisting tool element or lever that engaged the metal stock was really not a part of the tool and not carried thereon, but according to this invention it has been the object to use this lever arm for twisting the band metal stock as a handle that can be carried on the tool and at the same time after effecting the twisting operation permitting the removal of the twisted stock laterally through the twisting work openings in the tool. According to this invention and the way that the twisting device is constructed, such as shown generally at 42, its handle 43 and the device. itself remains on the tool along with the device 42 and need not be removed to remove the twisted stock piece. The stock piece 41 is not only extended over the seat 39 in a lateral manner as shown in FIGS. 2 and 3, but is extended through a slot in a die member 44 carried by its upper and lower flanges in the upper edges of a support member 45 that carries the twisting device 42 in a removable and rotatable manner. The member 45 has an aligned loose fitting slot for the transverse size of the bar stock while the die 44 has a substantially exact size 44 and will serve as a wear piece upon the member 45 when extending the metal stock through the member 45 and at the same time this die 44 will limit the size of the band metal stock that can be placed into this tool. This tool for all of its functions is limited for use in working band metal stock of but one given size and thus this twisting device 42 is limited in the exact size of the band metal stock that can be used, the die 44 having the exact transverse opening size for the stock piece 41.
On the side face of the member 45 a flanged hollow cylinder portion 46 with its flange 47 is fixed for rotation by its handle 43 that is integrally secured thereto by clamp plates 48 with its curved edge portion 49 extending over the flange and secured to the face of the member 45 by a nutted bolt 51 and against a piece 52 of slightly larger thickness than the thickness of the flange 47 so that the flange 47 can be readily worked and rotated between the edge projection 49 and upon the side face 45. This cylindrical member 46 is further connected by its flange rotation by a clamp plate 53 fixed to the face of the member 45 by a nutted bolt 54.
This twisting sleeve 46 have opposing twisting keys 56 and S7 ruggedly secured to the cylinder interior as by welding or of integral formation and have respectively parallel stock engaging edges 58 and 59. Between these edges 58 and 59 the band metal stock can be extended from the holes in the members 44 and 45 when the handle 43 is extended forwardly to the position shown in FIG. and so that the upper and lower faces of the band metal stock will respectively lie under the twisting key 47 and over the twisting key 56 and parallel therewith. With the handle 43 extending in the direction as shown in FIG. 5, the edges 58 and 59 and from the vertical center of the cylinder 46. Upon the arm 43 being elevated from its forward position over a vertical center position as shown in FIG. 6, the bar metal stock 41 will be engaged upon its upper and lower faces respectively by the edges 59 and 58 with the band metal stock 41 still in its flat condition and can be still free for removal from the tool laterally until further rotated pressure is placed on the arm 43 to effect the twisting operation. The twisting keys 56 and 57 will have taken new positions upon the band stock 41 so that their edges 58 and 59 will engage metal stock rather than their side faces. As shown in FIG. 6 twisting keys 56 and 57 are still equally spaced from one another and their edges are in position to twist the band stock 41.
Twisting force is now required to carry the arm 43 in the direction of the arrow in FIG. 6 to the position shown in FIG. 7 so that twisting of the band metal stock 41 would have been effected and a twist portion 61 made in the band stock 41 as best seen in FIGS. 7, 8, 9 and 10. It will be noted that the ends of the band stock 41 at the opposite sides of the tool between the twisted portion 61 will now extend degrees apart, the end of the bar stock clamped in the tool having remained horizontal while the portion of the band stock extending outwardly from the key cylinder device 46 will extend vertically.
The problem once the twist is placed in the band stock is to remove the twisted band stock from the tool without removal of the twisting device and its inwardly extending twisting portions from the side of the tool. It can be seen that the twisted piece 41 cannot be removed to the left as viewed in FIG. 4 through the slot openings in the members 44 and 45 and with the arm 43 in the position as shown in FIG. 7 the twisted band stock cannot be moved to the right as viewed in FIG. 4 and outwardly. Thus according to the present invention, this problem has been solved, the handle 43 is now lifted from the position shown in FIG. 7 to the position shown in FIG. 6 and the twisted band stock 41 can be pulled outwardly from between the twisting portions 56 and 57, the twisted stock through which twisted portion 61 having the section shown in 59 so that the band stock 41 can be pulled outwardly and to the right as shown in FIG. 4. Any further movement of the handle 43 from the position shown in FIG. 6 toward the position shown in FIG. 5 would effect the untwisting of the band stock 41 and remove the twisted portion 61.
In order to limit the final twisting movement of the work handle 43 and of the band stock depending upon the springiness of the stock material an adjustable stop bolt 62 is provided upon an angle bracket that is fastened by nutted bolts 64 to a vertically extending angle plate 66 extending laterally from the support' bracket construction 18 for the lower handle 15. The angle bracket 64 can also be vertically adjustable upon the vertically extending member 66 by the provision of a slot in the bolt openings of the bracket 63 or of the member 66. The side edge of the support member 66 as viewed in FIG. 4 can serve as a guide to steady the arm 43 as it is rotated toward its final position against the stop 62 to when its twisting action is being effected upon the band stock piece 41.
It should now be apparent that there has been provided a twisting device for a stock piece which all of the parts thereof can remain upon the work too] without being removed in order to effect the removal of the twisted band stock piece from the tool. The twisted stock piece 41 is removed with its twisted portion 61 to the right as shown in FIG. 4 from twisting device 42 and the work tool after the arm 43 has been swung upwardly into the position shown in FIG. 6.
While various changes may be made in the detailed construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In a band metal work tool, said work tool having handle parts and a seat for receiving a flat band stock piece, said. handle parts being pivoted to one another, a twisting device including a longitudinally extending handle and a hollow cylinder secured to the inner end of the handle means for rotatably securing said hollow cylinder to the one of the body parts of the work tool, said hollow cylinder being adapted to receive the bank stock piece so that it may extend laterally therethrough, said hollow cylinder having inwardly extending twist portions opposing one another adapted and the cylinder is swung in one direction to receive the flat band stock piece between opposing side faces of the twist key portions, said twist cylinder is pivoted by its handle through 180 to remove the side faces from the upper and lower faces of the band stock piece and to engage end work edges of the twist key portions with the upper and lowerright faces of the stock removed from a center plane taken through the hollow twist cylinder, said handle on being turned for engagement with the end edges of the inwardly extending twist key portions adapted to effect a twist upon the stock piece intermediate the ends thereof, said hollow cylinder upon being rotated from its final twisted position releaving the edges of its twist key portions from the twisted portion of the stock piece and permitting lateral outward movement of the stock piece from the stock twisting device without removal of parts of the twisting device.
2. In a band metal work too], having a band stock twisting device as defined in claim 1 and said hollow twist cylinder having a peripheral flange on its inner end thereof and clamp plate means securing said cylinder through its flange to a face of the body part for rotation thereover.
3. In a band metal work tool, having a band stock twisting device as defined in claim 1 and one of the handle parts of the work tool having a vertical support therefore and an adjustable support bracket upon said vertical support adapted to serve as a stop to render twisting movement of the handle of the twisting device to adjust for the different springiness of the band stock material.
4. In a band metal work tool, having a band stock twisting device as defined in claim 1 and a die member carried-by the body part which carries the band stock device having a die opening for receiving the band stock and to limit transverse size of the stock that can be extended into the twist cylinder, said die opening being aligned with the clamp seat of the handle parts of the work tool to accommodate the band stock piece when clamped upon the seat of the handle parts.
5. In a band metal work too], having a band stock twisting device as defined in claim 1 and said handle of the twisting device being movable in a vertical plane and said body part having a guide edge against which the handle of the twisting device will be engaged while effecting the twisting of the band stock piece, whereby to keep the twist cylinder of the handle in receiving the work load against movement off its axial rotational axis upon the body part.
6. The device of claim 1, in which the seat defines a flat through-space slot.

Claims (6)

1. In a band metal work tool, said work tool having handle parts and a seat for receiving a flat band stock piece, said handle parts being pivoted to one another, a twisting device including a longitudinally extending handle and a hollow cylinder secured to the inner end of the handle means for rotatably securing said hollow cylinder to the one of the body parts of the work tool, said hollow cylinder being adapted to receive the bank stock piece so that it may extend laterally therethrough, said hollow cylinder having inwardly extending twist portions opposing one another adapted and the cylinder is swung in one direction to receive the flat band stock piece between opposing side faces of the twist key portions, said twist cylinder is pivoted by its handle through 180* to remove the side faces from the upper and lower faces of the band stock piece and to engage end work edges of the twist key portions with the upper and lower right faces of the stock removed from a center plane taken through the hollow twist cylinder, said handle on being turned for engagement with the end edges of the inwardly extending twist key portions adapted to effect a twist upon the stock piece intermediate the ends thereOf, said hollow cylinder upon being rotated from its final twisted position releaving the edges of its twist key portions from the twisted portion of the stock piece and permitting lateral outward movement of the stock piece from the stock twisting device without removal of parts of the twisting device.
2. In a band metal work tool, having a band stock twisting device as defined in claim 1 and said hollow twist cylinder having a peripheral flange on its inner end thereof and clamp plate means securing said cylinder through its flange to a face of the body part for rotation thereover.
3. In a band metal work tool, having a band stock twisting device as defined in claim 1 and one of the handle parts of the work tool having a vertical support therefore and an adjustable support bracket upon said vertical support adapted to serve as a stop to render twisting movement of the handle of the twisting device to adjust for the different springiness of the band stock material.
4. In a band metal work tool, having a band stock twisting device as defined in claim 1 and a die member carried by the body part which carries the band stock device having a die opening for receiving the band stock and to limit transverse size of the stock that can be extended into the twist cylinder, said die opening being aligned with the clamp seat of the handle parts of the work tool to accommodate the band stock piece when clamped upon the seat of the handle parts.
5. In a band metal work tool, having a band stock twisting device as defined in claim 1 and said handle of the twisting device being movable in a vertical plane and said body part having a guide edge against which the handle of the twisting device will be engaged while effecting the twisting of the band stock piece, whereby to keep the twist cylinder of the handle in receiving the work load against movement off its axial rotational axis upon the body part.
6. The device of claim 1, in which the seat defines a flat through-space slot.
