Abstract
301,413. Brand, J. J. C., and Laing, B. June 25, 1927. Divided on 303,422. Pneumatic conveyers.-Consists in a method of filling a ship's bunker or other storage compartment with powdered fuel, such as coal, and in a method of subsequently discharging the fuel from the bunker &c. whereby spontaneous combustion or explosion is prevented. Inert gas, such as flue or combustion gas, is circulated through the bunker &c., to displace the air and powdered fuel is then blown into the bunker &c. through a pipe line by means of inert gas. Gases of combustion may be withdrawn from a flue &c. or from an internal combustion engine, and after being cooled and dried may be used for circulation through the bunker. For blowing the powdered fuel from, say, a grinding and drying station on shore into the bunkers of a ship, flue or combustion gases are preferably cooled and compressed, e.g. to a pressure of 40 lbs. per square inch. When the bunker has been loaded with fuel, a further supply of inert gas may be admitted to displace air that has leaked in during the filling operation; during discharging, inert gas is allowed to take the place of the withdrawn fuel. For the unloading operation, there may be used one or more pipes extending through the bunker &c. and having one or more valve controlled ports therein, one end of the pipe or pipes communicating with a suction fan and the other being connected to a supply of inert gas. The fan is adapted to discharge to a dust separator, excess gas from the separator being preferably returned to the bunker or the like, while the powdered fuel passes from the separator to a " ready-use " bin. Before withdrawing the fuel from the bunker, its fluidity is enhanced by the method of injecting inert gas through it described in Specification 281,098; cooled and compressed flue gases may be led into the bunker at a number of places for this purpose.
