Abstract

301,334. Fitzgerald, F. W. V. May 27, 1927. Bulbs.-An electric lamp bulb, for use in a vehicle headlamp, is fitted internally with a screen which is fixed between the filament and the lower portion of the reflector, and which is slatted or pronged, or provided with slits or other apertures. The screen may be plane, or angular or semi-circular or otherwise curved in crosssection, and it may be made of nickel or other metal, and gilded or otherwise provided with a coloured reflecting surface on both sides. Bv this means the screen reflects part of the light projected downwardly by the source upwardly on to the upper portion of the reflector, or sideways on to another part of the screen and then on to the lower part of the reflector, so that the intensity of the downwardly directed part of the beam from the lamp is increased and that of the upwardly directed part is decreased. The prongs of the screen may taper towards the front of the-lamp and the screen may be bell-mouthed at its forward extremity. The screen may be arranged to have its greatest screening effect on the near side of the reflector, for which purpose the prongs on the near side may be longer, broader, or both larger and broader, or set at a different angle to those on the offside. In the form shown, an electric lamp bulb 1, Fig. 1, is fitted internally with a screen 3 provided with prongs 4. The screen 3 is attached to the ends of a semi-circular metal strip 5, Fig. 4, which is secured at its centre to a second, strip 7 which is welded or otherwise. secured to the lower limb of the bent rod 8 carrying the filament 2.
