Surface and outline gauge. - A portable load gauge for railway wagons comprises an upright adapted to bear on the ground and and also on one of the track rails. An upright wooden bar 1 of T-section is connected at the bottom to two struts 3 diverging from the upright and connected together by a cross-piece. Fittings 5 are provided for engagement with one rail. The bar 1 is adapted to engage the ground by means of a sheath 6 in which the bar can slide and in which it is secured by a set screw 7. At the top an iron sheath 12 is provided, adapted to receive the head of the gauge which is secured by a sat screw 13. The head comprises light wooden bars 14, 15, 16 secured together as shown and may be provided with a coloured mark at the point A and with a chain 17 at the point B to define the load curve shown in dotted lines. Curved wooden strips, or several chains 17 'may be used for this purpose. The vertical position of the bar 1 is shown by a plumb line 8 consisting of a cylindrical weight suspended by a cord from the point 9 and swing- ing in holes in a bracket 10. In a modification the upright is mounted on three telescopic struts. In a further modification, two of the struts are rigid with the upright and the third hinged to it. A spirit level may be used instead of a plumb line.
