Abstract

300,221. Sever, W., and Speakman, J. B. July 9, 1927. Apparatus for making filaments.- Artificial textile fibres having wave or curl similar to that of natural fibres such as wool or cotton are made by spinning a fluid medium of any suitable kind into a liquid or gaseous coagulating medium to which a swirling or eddying motion is imparted near the spinneret. The coagulating medium may be given any kind of motion which will result in the production of swirling or eddying currents near the spinneret. For example, motion may be imparted to the coagulating medium by means of a reciprocating plate surrounding or close to the spinneret, or the coagulating medium may be given a sufficiently high rate of flow, or two or more streams of coagulating medium may be caused to meet near the spinneret. Simple harmonic motion imparted to the coagulating medium in a direction at a right-angle to the flow of the spinning medium produces in the fibres such forms as those shown in Fig. 1, a - - c. A second superposed motion of the coagulating medium, or reciprocating motion other than simple harmonic motion, produces more complex forms such as are shown in Fig. 2, a, b. Reciprocating motion of the coagulating motion in the direction of flow produces forms such as are shown in Fig. 3, a, b, such forms being capable of felting. Interchanging types of motion may be applied so as to prevent the fibres from subsequently slipping wholly into phase with each other.
