Wasking-machines with rotary receptacles.-In a washing and drying machine comprising a washing drum that can be driven at different speeds arranged in a washing trough mounted in an oscillating manner, a locking device such as a bolt is provided by means of which the trough can be locked in an oblique position forming an angle of less than 90‹ with the vertical centrifuging position. Preferably the change speed gearing driving the drum is automatically changed to the appropriate gear when the trough is turned into position for washing or for drying. The trough 1 is mounted so as to rock on the spindle 2, and can be locked in the position shown in Fig. 2 by means of a bolt 3, Fig. 1. The washing drum is secured to a spindle 5 which is driven, through gearing giving two alternative speeds, from an electric motor 6. The gear change is effected by a sliding movement of the spindle 5, a spring key on the latter engaging one or other of the pinions 11, 14. A projection 16 on the frame of the machine raises the spindle and so engages the gear to rotate the drum at high speed for drying when the trough is turned to the vertical position. The lower gear is engaged when the spindle drops on the trough being turned to the oblique position.
