Packing tyres; baling processes.-Tyres are packed by placing a number in a box or crate so that the top one is considerably above the level of the top of the crate, placing the cover on the top and compressing until the cover can be secured to the sides of the crate. As shown, the crate 14, containing tyres T, is run into the apparatus on rollers 12 to arrive beneath a plunger 18. The plunger is carried by links 20 pivoted to threaded blocks 24 on a shaft, the halves 28, 30 of which are oppositely screwed. The shaft is rotated by a motor 40, belt 36, and pulley 34 to move the blocks towards each other, thus depressing the plunger and the cover 16 of the crate so that the cover can be secured by clips, nails, wires, &c. to the sides of the orate. The tyres are preferably placed in the crate in a slightly staggered formation.
