Abstract

299,127. Taylor, L. C. Aug. 17, 1927. Drilling-machines. -In a machine for drilling dowel holes in the ends of sticks for making cane and other furniture and for shaping the ends to fit against the peripheries of other sticks at ihe joints such as those shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the tool heads are axially movable along frames which are angularly adjustable about horizontal pivots adjustable transversely and longitudinally on a bed which receives the work. The tool spindles 18 are journaled in bearings 17 on heads which are movable along guide bars 19 for feeding, the downward, movement being obtained by Bowden wire mechanism 24 connected to separate treadles beneath the machine and the upward movement by springs 23 surrounding one or both of the bars 19. The treadles for the separate heads may be actuated independently, but a third treadle is provided to actuate both simultaneously. The guide bars 19 are secured to distance pieces 20, 21, the piece 2<1> having trunnions 22 at the ends pivoting in end plates 14 and being provided with arms 28 carrying bolts 29 which pass through arcuate slots 30 in the plates for locking. Alternatively, one end plate only may be used for each head. The plates 14 are mounted on pairs of bars 13 transversely slidable through brackets 15 which are longitudinally slidable along bars 12 attached to the end frames 11. Screws such as 16 are provided for locking the heads in their adjusted positions, and instead of being mounted on the bars 12, the heads may be adjustable along guides on the horizontal frame 10. Arcuate scales 32 are provided on the plate 14 co-operating with pointers 33 on the trunnions 22 to facilitate, angular adjustment of the heads and linear scales may be provided on the bed 10 to facilitate adjustment of the heads to suit the length of a work piece 47. The spindles are driven by belts 35 passing over jockey pulleys 36 and engaging pulleys 37 attached to or formed integral with pulleys 40. A belt 38 passes round all the pulleys 40 and is guided by pulleys 39, 41, one of the pulleys 39 being driven by a belt 43 from an electric motor. For shaping the ends of a wooden rod 47 annular cutters 46 are used and the work is held by hand or by a clamp (not shown) in semi-circular recesses in wooden blocks 49 carried by brackets 50 adjustable along guides 65 in the frame 10. When drilling end holes in a rod for the reception of dowel pins the tool spindles are provided with twist drills and are adjusted to a horizontal position in alignment with the work, the latter then being held in wooden blocks 49 having shouldered recesses to receive the. end thrust of the drills. For drilling transverse holes for dowel pins one end of the work is mounted on a spindle rotatable by hand and provided with a dividing head while the other end is supported by a conical centre point or by end plates 61 having V-notches and adjustably secured by bolts and slots 64 to the brackets 50. A third tool head may be provided for operating between the ends of the work or several sets of heads may be provided on the same frame 10 for control by different operators.
