Soles; inset wearing- parts. - Holes or depressions are provided, either in the outer sole itself or in a midsole, behind studs, spikes or bars attached to and projecting from the outer sole or tread-portion of a boot or shoe to prevent the inner sole, which is adjacent to the heads of the studs, from coming into contact with them. The outer sole may be of comparatively non-compressible material such as leather C, Fig. 2, and separated from the insole G by a pad H of rubber, cork, or other resilient material, with holes or depressions therein corresponding in number and position to the studs; or the outer sole may be of compressible material such as rubber H, Fig. 3, with holes or depressions therein to form cushioning means for the heads of the studs etc.; or the sole may be attached to a pad formed with the holes or depressions. The stud, spike or the like A may be secured by riveting its head over a plate or washer F, Fig. 2, located within the hole or depression and resting on the outer sole or against a sheet or disc of waterproof material E interposed between the plate or washer F and the outer sole C; or the stud, spike &c. A may be screwed into a screw washer or nut, as shown. The holes or depressions mav be formed in the inner face of the outer sole by the clinching of the studs.
