Winding - machines; stop - motions; threadguides.-In a yarn-winding machine wherein the spools are frictionally driven, a thread-guide 11 which is reciprocated with the traversing guide 8 and is normally clear of a stirrup 14, Fig. 3, is adapted on undue increase of thread tension to contact with the stirrup 14 and, through a pin 16 working in a slot 17, move a lifting-member 18 to separate the driving-discs 3, 4, Fig. 4. The guide 11 may be loaded by a weight or spring whereby the tension requisite to displace the guide may be regulated. In a modification, the guides 8 are formed as rollers on brackets 22, Fig. 6, the member 11 being weighted at 28 and formed with a curved part 11<11>. The member 11 is normally kept floating by the passing thread 9, but on undue increase of thread tension the curved member 11" contacts with the stirrup 14 and allows the spring 30 to move the member 18 to separate the discs 3, 4, Fig. 7. The spool carrier 6 is mounted so as to be swung manually in a horizontal plane out of its operative position to facilitate removal and replacement of the spool. The spool spindle 38, mounted on ball or roller bearings and secured to the disc 4, is carried by the swivelling member 33 which is mounted on the pivot pin 32 secured to the bracket 29. When the spool is turned out of the winding-position the member 33 is shifted aixally on the pin 32 against the spring 47 by the co-operation of a ball 36 and a groove 34, and is locked in the new position by the ball entering a stop 35, Fig. 11. On returning the spool to the winding-position the drive is restarted gradually as the member 33 moves down the pin 32.
