Abstract
298,461. Siemens & Halske Akt.-Ges. Oct. 8, 1927, [Convention date]. Oxidizing; effecting chemical reactions by immersion of solids in liquids.-The oxidation and reduction of liquids Intended for use as electrolytes are effected by the introduction into the liquid of a reactive substance in powder form enclosed in a perforated container. A perforated box 1 of sheet iron, lined with a fine meshed network 2 and having a cover secured by locking devices 4 may be used to contain the material. The box must be made heavy in order that gases generated by the reaction may not lift it above the surface of the liquid. Examples of the employment of the method are the oxidation of sodium stannite to stannate prior to electrolysis, sodium peroxide being the reagent enclosed in the box, and the oxidation of zinc lyes in preparation for subsequent electrolysis.
