Abstract
Pigments are rendered more organophilic and hydrophobic by forming a dispersion thereof in water containing a dispersing agent, adding thereto, first, an "active agent" which is either (a) an alkali metal salt of a higher fatty acid, resinic acid or naphthenic acid as an aqueous solution or sol, or (b) a mono-or disubstituted polyorganosiloxane characterized by the chain unit <FORM:0847007/III/1> where X is hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, alkaryl, alkenyl, or aralkyl, and Y is alkyl, aryl, alkaryl, alkenyl or aralkyl, as a stable aqueous emulsion, the compound (a) or (b) being compatible with the dispersing agent, and second, one or more of the soluble salts of aluminium, magnesium, zinc, titanium, zirconium, the rare-earth metals, tin, antimony or lead capable of suppressing the action of the dispersing agent, whereby a colourless insoluble coating is formed on the pigment, then neutralising the resulting suspension and separating and washing the pigment. In Examples, (1) a suspension of anatase titanium dioxide is formed in water containing sodium silicate, a solution of sodium stearate and then a solution of aluminium sulphate are added; (2) a suspension of rutile titanium dioxide in water containing sodium silicate is formed, a solution of sodium abietate, then a solution of aluminium sulphate are added; (3) the aluminium sulphate in (2) is replaced by a mixture of aluminium and zinc sulphates; (4) a solution of anatase titanium dioxide in water containing sodium silicate is formed, an emulsion of a poly dimethyl siloxane, then a solution of aluminium sulphate are added; (5) the anatase of example (4) is replaced by rutile, (8) the aluminium sulphate of Example 5 is replaced by a mixture of aluminium and titanium sulphates, (9) zinc oxide is dispersed in water containing caustic soda, and sodium laurate followed by aluminium sulphate is added, (10) the sodium laurate in (9) is replaced by a poly dimethyl siloxane, (11) lithopore is dispersed in water containing sodium pyrophosphate, and soap is added followed by aluminium sulphate. The results are compared with examples using no "active agent".
