Abstract
298,156. Soc. Anon. Stenotype Grandjean. Oct, 4, 1927, [Convention date]. Ink-ribbon mechanism.-In ink-ribbon mechanism for stenographic and like machines, the feed mechanism comprises a worm-shaft which is rocked automatically to reverse the feed by means comprising a spring adapted to yield if the worm does not mesh fully with the worm-wheel when brought into engagement therewith; the inkribbon may pass over guides which are movable to change the colour-stripe and are associated with an indicator. In the mechanism shown in Figs. 1 and 7 the spools 34 are driven alternately by worms 37 on a shaft 38 journaled in a plate 45 which can rock on a vertical pivot 46. The shaft carries a loose collar 39 which is connected to the universal bar, and drives the shaft by means of a pawl or other one-way coupling. A spring blade 48 on the plate 45 engages a fork 49 in a plate 50 which can rock a pivot 50<a> and has a slot co-operating with a pin 51<a> on a plunger 51. A spring 60 engages the V-shaped top of the plate 50. The plunger is urged upwards by a spring 52 but is normally locked by a rod 58 carried by links 53 which are supported at the rear by rocking arms 57 and at the front by an arm 54 on a shaft 55, a spring 58a retaining the rod in engagement with a groove in the plunger. The shaft 55 is provided with arms 56 for engaging members 59 at the ends of the ink ribbon. In some cases the rod is carried by arms secured to the shaft 55. When the ink ribbon has been wound off either of the spools, the shaft 55 is rocked, the rod 58 is retracted, the spring 52 raises the plunger, the plates 50, 45 are rocked, and the worm shaft is rocked to disengage and engage the worms associated with the worm-wheels of the full and empty spools respectively. If the worm fails to engage fully with the worm-wheel, the spring 48 yields momentarily to permit of the worm working into engagement. When the reversing-movement is complete, the plunger is depressed manually to re-set the spring 52. The ink ribbon passes over vertically movable guide-rollers 31 which are raised to change the colour-stripe by depressing a plunger 61. The plunger has a pin engaging a slot in a rocking plate 64 which is connected by a link 66 to rocking arms 32 engaging the guide-rollers. The link actuates a rocking plate 69 provided with colour indicators 71, 72 which are visible alternately through a window.
