Abstract

Applied by springs.-A device adapted, inter alia, to control emergency brakes on vehicles comprises, in the form shown in Fig. 1, a thimble A which is attached by a hook B to a fixed object D and has slotted walls. A plunger E retained in the. thimble by fusible metal J filling up the thimble, and slots is attached by a hook F to, for example, a fire-door H adapted to be closed by a spring I when released by fusion of the metal J. In a modification, the thimble is surrounded by an electric resistance element, so that the metal may be fused by the closing of a switch, or by a cover to which hot air or gas may be supplied. In another modification, Fig. 4, suitable for use with a brake, the thimble A is secured to the vehicle by a bracket S, and the plunger E which is connected to a brake-rod R is moved by a spring N when the metal J is fused. The thimble is surrounded by a cover L to which can be admitted steam, or hot exhaust gases. Alternatively, an electric heating resistance may be embodied in this construction.
