Abstract
14,005. Campbell, V. E. July 1. Gas cocks and valve s, automatically closing on extinguishing; incandescent lamps.- Gas burners for incandescent and ordinary lights, Bunsen burners, &c. are fitted with automatic cut-offs, which are arranged so that the thermostatic devices are subject to strain only when cool, so that the pressure exerted on the controlling- devices shall be uniform, and so that the thermostatic element may be heated by pilot burners arranged below the main burners. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, a burner 14 and a pilot burner 22 are supplied with gas by a plug valve 16. Loosely mounted on the spindle of the valve 16 is a mutilated gear-wheel 28 which gears with a wheel 31 on the arbor of a ratchet-wheel 32 engaging a pawl 33 of the first of a train of wheels 27. The last wheel of this train is normally held by a spring- controlled brake-lever 45, Fig. 4, but when the gas 'is by any means extinguished, the lever 45 is moved to release the train of wheels 27 by means of the thermostatic device which consists of a tube 51 of readily expansible metal attached to a fixed block 50 and containing a depending rod 53, fixed to its upper end, of a metal not so readily expansible. The rod 53 is connected to levers which are normally clear of the lever 45, but when the burner is not lighted the greater contraction of the tube 51 causes the levers to depress the brake lever 45, and the train 27 rotates the valve to its closed position. The train of wheels is wound up by the turning-on of the gas, a pin 39 on the cock acting on a pin 40 on the wheel 28, which is connected to a spring 36 fixed also to the casing. The movement of the wheel 28 is limited by a stop 30 which engages shoulders 29 on the wheel. For incandescent lamps the auxiliary flame is preferably dispensed with, the thermostat extending into the globe so as to be heated by the main burner. Specifications No. 15,919, A.D. 1906,.and No. 8511, A.D. 1908, are referred to.
