Dynamos and motors, cooling.-In an electric machine having coolers on the sides with horizontal cooling tubes built into the casing and having inlet and outlet passages communicating with the upper and lower parts of the casing, the cooling medium is circulated by several fans driven by auxiliary machines, preferably by electric motors arranged close together in the axial direction of the machine, and a part only of the axial length of the coolers is apportioned to each fan. In Fig. 3, the cooling medium is propelled by a row of fans 6 driven by electric motors 8, through a space 3 between the stator 2 and the machine casing 5, and is cooled in coolers 4 located at the sides. Baffles may be provided to abstract moisture, and the fans may be mounted above the machine. Two rows of fans may be employed arranged at the sides as shown in Fig. 2 and either above or below the coolers, and by altering the relative positions of guides 11 and the fan or fans, the direction of flow of the cooling medium may be reversed. Rows of fans may be located above and below the machine. The fans may be driven by small steam turbines or other motors which are not necessarily vertical as shown, for example, the drive may be transmitted through mitre wheel gearing. Several or all the fans may be driven by one another.
