Charging.-In apparatus for feeding pulverized fuel to furnaces, of the kind comprising a screw c arranged in the lower part of a hopper b, there is disposed on the end of the screw shaft a rotary valve d which is maintained in the open position while the screw is in operation but is automatically moved to close the outlet a when the screw ceases to function. The screw is driven through bevel gearing from a steam turbine f having a hand-operated control-valve e the movement of which is transmitted through gearing g, i, k to a rack l engaged by a pinion m which is secured on the end of the sleeve carrying the valve d.
