Abstract
342,926. Mechanical stoking. HANNA, W. T., Brotherton Road, Cincinnati, Ohio, U.S.A. Feb. 28, 1930, No. 6681. Convention date, April 5, 1929. [Class 51 (i).] In stoker mechanism p a r - ticularly for locomotives, in which the fuel is conveyed to a housing on the firebox by worm conveyers and fed to the firebox bv worm feeding means, a ledge is provided extending longitudinally of the worm feeding means to reduce back pressure upon the fuel column. Coal is fed from the tender by a screw conveyer 15 and delivered to a housing 13, 14 of increasing diameter where it rises to concave ledges 33 extending longitudinally parallel with the peripheries of two rotating worm feeders 27, 28. The ledges are eccentric to the axis of the feeders to prevent jamming of the fuel. The rising fuel spills over the ledges at 33a into the path of the outer ends of the spiral vanes of the feeders, which pass the fuel through the fire opening 12 over a blast chamber 34 to a distributing plate 35 from which it is scattered over the fire by jets of steam issuing from the blast chamber. The rotating feeders 27, 28 are driven by gearing within housings 31 and are journalled in plates 29, 30 forming parts of the wall of the housing 13. Telescopic shafts 32 drive the feeders from the power device 21 driving the transfer conveyer 15. Instead of being inclined towards one another as shown the feeders may be parallel.
