This invention relates to locomotives having1 furnaces using pulverulent fuel.
he use .of pulverized fuel has manifest advantages in certain circumstances and in countries where large quantities of low grade ,coal are available pulverizedcoal is largely used for stationary furnaces. Its use, however, for locomotives is limited because of the difficulty of storing and transporting the pulverized material.
The present invention consists in providing on a locomotive having a furnace using pulverulent fuel a fuel pulverizing mill either on the locomotive proper or its tender. Facilities which may comprise automatic devices are provided for. feeding the fuel from the tender to the mill and for feeding the pulverized fuel from the mill directly to the furnace or to a feeding device there N for.
One or more power fans, ejector devices or mechanical conveyors may be provided on the locomotive for blowing the pulverized fuel from the mill or mills to the furnace of the boiler.
Power for operating the pulverizing mill y n device may .be obtained from the locomotive, or from a petrol motor or other independent source so that during normal running such power may be obtained from the locomotive, and the petrol or other auxiliary motor used for driving the mill when there is no steam in the boiler. 4
When fans are used for blowing the pulverized fuel to the furnace, the furnace may be fitted with atmospheric burners and the air supply thereto obtained from the fan by a separate pipe. Also the air supply to the assng `it through pipes or chambers adjacent the furnace.

Figures 4, and 6 are corresponding views of a modified construction of the invention. In these drawings 2 is the locomotive propenand 3 its tender. The tender is provided with a fuel recepteclehaving'nlocomotive to illustrate the inven,
clined sides 3", 3", 3" and 3d leading to a trough 3 in which extends the lower end of an endless conveyor 4, the upper end' ofthe conveyor 4 being arranged to deliver fuel from the trough 3 into a common feeding hopper 5" of two pulverizing mills 5" and 5c driven "by a turbine 6 connected by a steam pipe 6" to the boiler, or the mills may be driven by n petrol motor 17"'. 4
The spaces 3 beneath the inclined sides 3, 3", 3 and 3 are utilized as water tanks.
The turbine 6 also drives a fan 7 for supplying air to atmospheric burners 8 through a pipe 9, the burners 8 being arranged in the rear wall of the furnace 13.
The pulverized fuel from the top of the f mills 5" and 5c is discharged through pipesf 10, 11 and l2 to the burners 8. One or more valves may be provided inthe pipe system 10, 11, 12 fo-rffregulating the feed o f the pulverized-'fuel to the furnace 13.
The two pulverizing mills 5" and 5 are preferably provided with driving gear whereby the can be driven separately or together so t at on a heavy'load both mills can be utilized, while-:should one become damaged or otherwise ineffective, the other mill will have sufficient capacity Vto deliver suilicient fuel to the furnace to permit of the satisfactory operation of the locomotive, possibly at a reduced speed.
The discharge of the pulverized fuel from the mills 5" and 5c to the burners 8 is by means of the fan 7. The air to the mills 5" and 5c and fan 7 is heated by drawing in through acasing or jacket 15 adjacent the walls of the furnace 13, and is drawn from the casing or jacket 15 through the pi 16" 16" 17, 188L and 18" to the mills 5" an 5".
fn the modified construction of the invention illustrated by Figures 4, 5 and 6, the inclined sides 3", 3" and 3d of the tender 3 converge to a horizontal trough 3 in which is arranged a spiral conveyor 4 the front end of which discharges fuel into the lower endof a vertical spiral conveyor 4". From the top of the conveyor 4:" the fuel is discharged into a hoplper 5' arranged to dis charge fuel-as in t e previous example into the pulverizing mills 5" and 5. These mills are duriven lby petrol motors 17l and 17", or by turbines 6 and 6" which also drive fans 7" and 7. nfthis example the fuel from the'top of the pulverizing mills 5" and 5 is fed along pipes 10"L and 10" to the front erator havingl a end of a furnace feed conduit 8a arranged to 'scharge fuel into the' furnace 13. The feed conduit 8* is provided at its front and ,rear ends with dampers'20 and 21.
The discharge from the pulverizer to the lirebox may be by means of an injector device into the top or bottom of the firebox or by means of a. screw or other feeding device as described for example, in the specification of British Letters Patent No. 109,063.
. Means will, of course be provided for ensuring and regulating an air supply to the furnace rebox sufficient to ensure satisfac' tory combustion and means ma be rovided for regulating the supply o fue to the pulvenzer 1n accordance with the requirements of the furnace.
I claim- 1. A steam1 locomotive comprising a furnace using pulverulent fuel, a fuel pulverizlng mill, means for conveying pulverized fuel from the milll to the furnace, and self contained means for driving the mill independently of the driving power of the locomotive.
2. A 'locomotive comprising a steam genfurnace using pulverulent fuel, a fuel pulverizing mill, means for conveylng pulverized fuel 'from the mill to the furnace and self contained means for driving the mill when there is no steam in the steam generator.
3. A steam locomotive comprising a furnace using pulverulent fuel, a fuel pulverizing mill, means for conveying pulverized fuel from the mill to the furnace, a motor for driving the mill, and power for driving the motor, the power for driving the motor being independent of that for driving the locomotive.
4. A steam locomotive comprising a furnace using-pulverulent fuel, a fuel pulverizing mill, means for conveying pulverized fuel from the mill tothe furnace, a receptacle for un ulverized fuel, means for conveying the fiiel from the base of the fuel receptacle upwards to the mill, .and means for driving the mill independentl of the driving power of the locomotive, t e means for conveying the pulverulent fuel from the mill to the furnace being arranged to operate simultaneously with the means for drivfr ing the mill.
6. A steam locomotive comprising a furnace usin pulverulent fuel, a fuel pulverizing mi a fan for conveying pulverized fuel from the mill to the furnace, a receptacle for un ulverized fuel, means for conveying the el from the baseof the fuel of the locomotive.

A steam locomotive comprising a furnace using pulverulent fuel, a fuel pulverizing mill, a fan for conveying pulverized fuel from the mill to the furnace, a petrol motor, the petrol motor being arranged to drive the mill and the fan, and means for driving the'mill and fan from the power of thelocomotive.
9. A steam locomotive comprisinvf a furnace using pulverulent fuel, two fuel pulverizing mills, and means comprisinfr a fan for conveying pulverized fuel from flic mills to the furnace, and means for driving the fan and for driving the mills independently of the driving power of the locomotive.
10. A steam locomotive comprising a furnace using pulverulent fuel, two fuel pulverizing mills, a fan arranfred to convey pulverized fuel vfrom the mills to the furnace, a petrol motor, the petrol motor being arranged to drive the fan andthe mills, independently of the driving motive.

A steam locomotive comprising a furnace using pulverulent fuel, two fuel pulverizing mills, a fan arranged to convey pulverized fuel from the mills to the furnace, a petrol motor, the petrol motor being arranged to drive the mills and the fan, and means for driving the mills and fan from the power of the locomotive.l f

A steam locomotive comprising a furnaceusingpulverulent fuel, a fuel pulverizing mill, a fan arranged to convey pulverized fuel from the mill to the furnace, a'petrol motor, and a pipe for delivering air and pulverized fuel from the mill to the fan end of ths furnace, the petrol motor being arranged to drive the fan and the mill independently of the driving ovver of the locomotive.
