2 Claims.
This invention relates to transfer mechanism, especially for solid material.
This invention has utility in stokers with ready adaptability for direction variant through the entire swing of 360 between the supply and delivery directions as of conveyors herein shown of the screw type.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. l is a side elevation, with parts broken away, of an embodiment of the invention as a stoker installation, say for domestic solid fuel consumption between the bin and the furnace as hot air, hot water, or steam;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the inter-bin and furnace transfer mechanism between the conveyors, parts being broken away;
Fig. 3 is a section on the line III-III, Fig. 1, showing the unit in side elevation from the furnace side;
Fig. 4 is a section on the line IV-IV, Fig 3, showing the speed reduction drive to the furnace conveyor or screw and the transmission connection therefrom to the feed conveyor therefor from the bin;
Fig. is a section on the line V-V, Fig. 4, showing the transfer throat between the two con veyors; and
Fig. 6 is a bottom plan of this transfer unit.
Fuel bin I (Fig. 1) for coal has discharge leg or taper portion 2 into which may extend screw section 3 having disconnectible portion 4 at removable housing section 5 in connection with aligned screw conveyor section 6 in housing 1 extending from ring 8. This screw 6 enters the ring 8 through opening or passage 9 (Fig. 4) and extends to thrust bearing l0 opposite the port 9. Shaft H for this screw conveyor section 6 extends through this plate having thrust bearing I0 and there carries toothed gear l2 held in position thereon by washer I3 and nut l4. Closure plate is provided therefor as detachably mounted by bolts 16 (Fig. 3). This gear I2 is in mesh with ring gear I! (Figs. 4, 5) having bearing l8 coaxial with throat I9 leading from chamber 20 in the ring 8 to complementary chamber 2| in ring 22.
This gear I1 is oppositely or doubly toothed and, on the reverse side from that in mesh with the gear l2, it is in mesh with gear 23 on shaft 24 of screw 25 having thrust bearing 26 and extending through port 21 in housing 28 and through furnace wall 29 to burner 30. This burner 30 has air duct 3| also extending to the furnace. This duct 31 is from fan or blower 32 (Fig. 2) on shaft 33 of motor 34. Accordingly, this is a direct connection for the blower from the motor 34. This motor 34 additionally has pulley 35 from which extends belt 36 to pulley 31 on shaft 33in speed reduction transmission 39 having connection 40 to the gear 23 and the screw conveyor shaft 24 for transferring the solid fuel as coal to the burner at the furnace.
The rate of fuel combustion may be properly controlled by the rate of feeding fuel and the blast from the blower. The conveyor 25 is of larger capacity than that of the conveyor 6 which in its supply will crowd the incoming fuel into the throat l9.
The chamber 20 at the ring 8 into which the conveyor 6 discharges has bottom closure plate 4!. Remote therefrom and in alignment past the throat I9 is closure plate 42 for the chamber 2| from which there is delivery to the feed conveyor 25. The angularity between the conveyor housing I and the conveyor housing 28 is predetermined and then the parts are clamped by bolts 43 between the engaging means or plates 41, 42. Supplemental ports 44 may be closed by plugs 45 for additional range of placing. Should there not be ports 44 in appropriate alignment, it is only necessary to drill, through the plate, holes at the desired location for placing these bolts 43. Bolts 46 through base plate 41 anchor the motor 34 in position with this unit, Rocking bearing 48 for the screw conveyor 6 and rocking bearing 49 for the screw conveyor 25 allow for slight mis-alignment and promote efficiency under the varying conditions arising in stoker or conveyor operations.
What is claimed and it is desired to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. A pair of screw conveyors each having a shaft and a casing, a swivel joint between said conveyor casings, said joint having a double walled tubular housing providing an annular gear chamber between said walls in which chamber the conveyor shafts terminate, a gear on each conveyor shaft, and an intermediate gear, all of said gears being in the annular chamber providing a housed transmission between said conveyors.
2. A pair of screw conveyors each having a shaft and a casing, a swivel joint between said conveyor casings, said joint having a double walled tubular housing providing an annular gear chamber between said walls in which chamber the conveyor shafts terminate, a gear on each conveyor shaft, an intermediate gear, all of said gars being in the annular chamber providing a housed transmission between said conveyors, and a speed reduction drive for one of the conveyor shafts including a stubshaft in alignment with said conveyor shaft.
