Roasting-furnaces.-In a mechanical roasting- furnace of the superposed hearth type two or more of the hearths are formed with drop openings at different distances from the axis of the furnace in addition to the usual central or peripheral openings. The additional openings may be arranged irregularly or in concentric circles, and they may be fitted with devices for controlling the fall of the ore. The middle hearths are preferably formed with the largest number of additional openings.
