Washing-machines with rotary receptacles.-A washing-machine comprises a boiler separate from the washing tub and preferably disposed below it in which steam is produced under pressure and used for heating the washing liquid after having actuated a motor driving the movable part of the machine. The machine comprises a tube 1, Fig. 1, in which is partially submerged a perforated drum 2 in which the goods are placed, and which is rotatable on a horizontal axis. Below the tub 1 is a boiler 3 heated by means of a fire box and provided with the usual boiler fittings. A horizontal cylinder 5 is fixed to the tub at right angles to the axis of the drum 2, and is provided with a piston 6 secured to two piston rods 6a. Yokes 7 at the ends of the rods carry a cord 9 and a rod 8 between their upper and lower ends respectively. The cord 9 is wrapped round a sheave 9<a> on the axle of the drum 2, and the rod 8 carries stops 8<a> which actuate a four way valve or distributor 11 by means of which steam from the boiler 3 is admitted alternately to either end of the cylinder 5, causing the piston to reciprocate and the drum 2 to be rotated alternately in opposite directions. The exhaust pipe 15 from the distributor 11 leads to a four way cock 16, Fig. 4, having passages which enable the exhaust steam to be admitted to pipes 17, 18, 19. The pipe 17 leads to the tub 1, the pipe 18 leads to the drum 2 through the hollow axle thereof, and the pipe 19 leads to the atmosphere.
