Abstract
Boiling machines for desizing, smoothing, finishing, producing gloss, or effecting other dressing operations in the wet treatment of pieces of fabric comprise two winding cylinders h, i partly immersed in a wooden vat g containing hot water, and an upper pressure cylinder k arranged to bear on the winding cylinders h, i irrespective of their varying diameters, so that two pieces of fabric can be treated by the machine simultaneously. As shown in Fig. 2, when the cylinder h is being driven in the direction indicated by the arrow, one piece of fabric E is being wound thereon, passing first through a stretching device consisting of two stay rods u<1>, u<3> rigidly mounted on levers u<4> jointly rotatable about a central stay rod u<2> and provided with a clamping lever u<5>, then over a spreading device consisting of arms r, r<1> oscillatably mounted at the ends of the machine frame and held in position by a pin bolt q thereon, the arms r, r<1> carrying stay rods s, s<1>, s<2> rigidly mounted therebetween, the outer rod s being cylindrical and provided with spiral grooves diverging from the centre, and finally passing under a stay rod x<1> mounted between two extensions of the arms r, r<1>. While the piece E is being wound on the cylinder h, another piece F is being unwound from the other lower cylinder i, over the pressure cylinder k, and on to a take-off cylinder u temporarily mounted for this purpose in slot bearings in the inclined arms t, t<1>, at the same side of the machine as the cylinder h. As shown in Fig. 3, which is a cross section on the line C-D of Fig. 2, the <PICT:0365854/IV/1> <PICT:0365854/IV/2> <PICT:0365854/IV/3> axle of the take-off cylinder u is held between spacing plates v, w, the spacing plate w being movable in the direction of the cylinder axis by being mounted on a hollow support w<2>, which can be forced back against the action of a spring x by means of a two-armed lever w<3>, to facilitate removal and insertion of the cylinder u. The pressure cylinder k is journalled in bearings, l, l<1>, which are shiftable in guide slots open at the top of link arms m, m<1>. The lower ends of these arms are oscillatable on bolts n, n<1> rigidly mounted on the machine frame. The bearings l, l<1> are hingedly connected by means of links o, o<1> to weighted levers p, p<1> respectively mounted on the sides of the machine frame. The cylinder h is driven by one or other of two toothed wheels y<1>, y<2> engaging with a large toothed wheel y mounted on one end face thereof, according to the direction of rotation desired. The wheel y<1> is keyed on a shaft y<3>, as is also another toothed wheel y<5>. The toothed wheel y<2> and another y<6> are loosely mounted on a shaft y<4> which is rotated by means of a belt pulley z<3>. A claw clutch arrangement z shiftably but not rotatably mounted on the shaft y<4> can be moved into engagement with either of the half claw clutch faces formed on the wheels y<2>, y<6>, so that the drive can be imparted to the cylinders h either through the wheel y<2>, or in the opposite direction through the wheels y<6>, y<5>, y<1>.
