Selective punching machines.- -In a machine for punching statistical cards the card is fed from a stack to the punching apparatus, and is then fed to an ejector mechanism, connected to the card carriage, which discharges the card from the machine. The card carriage comprises slides 1, 2, Figs. 2, 8, connected for differential movement by a cord passing over a pulley and provided with card clips 14, 15 respectively. The slide carries also a pivoted card-clip 16. The clip 15 picks the card from a stack, on actuation of a lever 4 attached to the slide 1, and as the clip is restored to its original position the clip 14 passes the card beneath the punching mechanism in steps determined by an escapement mechanism ejector. When the lever 4 is rotated clockwise, Fig. 5, alter punching, it turns a bell-crank 19 through a lever 22 to move a long lever 24, pivoted on a pin connected to a transverse cardslide 29. The card is forcibly ejected by movement of the slide. Escapement. A rack 55 attached to the slide 1 is normally in mesh with the escapement mechanism. On depression of key 37 a bell-crank 41 moves a roller 46 acting upon the back face of the frame to swing it about the pivots and project the clip into the path of projections 49 on the card-carriage. If a lever 38 pivoted to the key stem is actuated when the key is depressed the frame is not tilted. The escapement mechanism comprises a bail operated from the keyboard which swings a plate 67 carrying a tooth 72 about a pivot 68. A pivoted spring- urged tooth 73 is positioned opposite the adjacent lower tooth of the escapement wheel and is moved to active position when the tooth 72 is disengaged.
