a citizen of the United States, residing in Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have inVented'QBertain new and useful Improvements in Flexible Connections, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to perforating machines in general, and more particularly to machines for perforating cards for accounting purposes and the like.-
Among the main objects of the present invention, it is aimed to rovide a card perforating machine in whlch a keyboard for setting the punches thereof is stationary and disposed at one end of the machlne, a movable carriage carrying the punch setting -members is disposed to travel across the machine, and means are provided for connecting the Stationary keyboard with the punch the machine constituting the present inven- Fig. 3.

Thekeyboard is mounted in the housing extension E, and comprises a clutch key 10 operatively connected to a clutch, and a plurallty of punch keys 11, in the present instance twelve in number, connected to the designations 1 to 9 inclusive, 0, 11, and 12,
the 11 key being marked X for the purposes hereinafter to be described. The clutch key 10 is mounted on a stem 10 and the punch keys 11 are each mounted on the stem 12-, the stems 10 and 12 bemg guided in the parallel plates 13 and 14 and normally maintained in raised positlon by the springs 15strained between the plate 13 and the keys 10 and 11. To the lower end of each stem 12 there I is secured a rigid wire .81, which serves to cooperate with the free and exposed end 82 of a cable 16 (a cable being provided for The connection of a stem 12 with a rigid wire 81 comprises essentially a slot 12' in the lower end of the stem 12, a block 19 pro vided with a socket into which the stem extends, the wire 81 extending up through the bottom of the block 19 into the socket of the .block 19, and then into the slot 12 of the stem. The blocks 19 are provided with set screws 20 for clamping the sides of the stems securely against the wires 81.
The cables 16 of the punch. keys are disposed to travel through and be guided by the flexible casings 21 which are connected- -at one end to the plate 22 of the extension E,
and at their other end to the block 18 of the carriage'C. The plate 22 is disposed parallel with the plates 13 and 14 and below the same. It is noted that each cable 16 is guided in an outer flexible casing 21, thus providing a pair of relatively movable parts forming a flexible connection connecting one of the pins 17 with a corresponding key 11.
The block 18 of the carriage C is provided with a plurality of recesses 23 terminating at their inner ends adjacent to the casings 21. In the recesses 23, the pins 17 are slidablv mounted.
The block 18 is mounted on the plate 24 of the carriage C, having recesses in its rear end to accommodate the upwardly extending arms'25 of the bell cranks 26 which are pivotally mounted on the shaft 27 which is journaled in the side plates 28 and 29 of the carriage, which side plates 28 and 29 are secured to the front and rear blocks 30 and 31, respectively, which, in turn, are mounted on the plate 32. The blocks 30 and 31 have lateral downward extensions 33 and 34. On the extension 33 are journaled the rollers and 36. the roller being larger than the roller 36 and having a channel formed to accommodate the rail 37, the rollers 35 and 36 engaging between them the rail 37 secured to one side of the main frame M of the machine. The extension 34, as shown in Fig. 2, has a rearwardly extending arm 38, on the end of which is journaled the roller 39, a forwardly extending arm 40 on. which is j ournaled the roller 41, and a downwardly extending arm 42 at the lower end on which is journaled the roller 43. The rollers 39 and 41 are provided with channels and adapted to engage the upper end of the rail 44 while the roller 43 is adapted to engage the lower side of the rail 44. The plate 24 is disposed on the upper edges of the side plates 28 and 29.
The plate 32 is provided with a row of openings 45 through which extend the lower ends of the setting members or rods 46, which are pivotally connected at their upper ends to the rearwardly extending arms 47 of the bell cranks 26. The rods 46 at their upward ends have forwardly extending lugs 48 to which are connected the springs 49 which are connected at their upper ends to the rod 50 secured to the rearward upper portions of the plates 28 and 29. The springs 49 flexibly maintain the lower ends of the rods 46 against the forward ends of the recesses 45. The rods 46 are disposed to engage the settable members or pins 51 of a pin box disposed in the path of movement of the carriage C and have a series of such pins 51 so arranged that at the successive positions of the carriage C the row of rods 46 will always be in alinement with and in cotiperative relation with a row of pins 51. These pins when depressed operate punches which perforate a card commensurate with the keys which are operated. The construction and operation of the pins 51 and punches is similar'to that illustrated in U. S. patent to James Powers, No. 1,138,314, dated May 4th, 1915. For guiding the bell cranks 26, the plate 52, supported by the plates 28 and 29, is provided which is pro-' vided with a series of recesses 53, one recess for each bell crank 26, the bell cranks 26 having forwardly extending enlargements 54 adjacent to the shaft 27, which enlargements are disposed to travel in the recesses 53 of the plate 52.
For simultaneously actuating the carriage whenever a rod 46 is actuated to depress a pin 51, the universal plate 55 is provided which is fixed to the shaft 56 and has a forwardly and upwardly extending portion 57 disposed to normally engage the lower edge of the bell cranks 26 just rearwardly of the enlargements 54. The universal plate 55 is normally maintained in its raised position by means of the spring 57 which is secured at one end to the pin 58 fixed to the block 30 and at its upper end secured to the arm 59 extending rearwardly from the shaft 56 and fixed thereto. The shaft 56 has fixed on its outer end beyond the plate 29 the pawl 60 which has a rearwardly extending hook arm 61 to engage the ratchet wheel 62, which is fixed to the gear 63 mounted on the stub shaft 64 journaled in the bearing 65 extending laterall from the extension 34. The gear 63 is dlsposed to mesh with the rack 66 secured to the outside of the rail 44. At the front end of the frame M there is mounted the spring housing 67 in which is disposed a coil spring 68, which spring housing is mounted on a shaft 69 journaled in the hearing 70 secured to the front end' of the frame M. The housing 67 has securedto it one end of a tape 71, the other end of which tape is secured to the hook 72 on the block 31. The spring 68 is so tensed that it will normally wind up the housing 67 so that the housing 67 will, in turn, wind up the tape 71 and thereby draw the carriage C forwardly. The pawl 60 and the movable element or pawl 73, about to be described, cotiperate with the ratchet wheel 62 to anchor the carriage C at various positions along the rack 66 and against movement by the spring 68. The movable element or pawl 73 is loosely pivoted to the shaft 56 and has its hook arm 74 extending rearwardly to engage the ratchet wheel 62. The pawl 60 has a. rearwardly extending portion 75 having a pin 76 extending inwardly therefrom and adapted to engage the lower surface of the rearwardly extending portion of the pawl 73. The pawl 73 is normally maintained in its depressed position by the spring 77, which connects the pin 78 secured to the pawl 73 with the pin 79 secured to the extension 34. From the foregoing it will thus be seen that whenever the universal plate 55 is depressed by the actuation of a be crank 26, it willin turn oscillate the shaft 56, depress the pawl 60 and thereby raise the pawl 73 so that the a spring 68." For returning the carriage C to its rearward position, the handle 80 is provided extending upwardly from the stub shaft 64 on 'Which the gear 63 and ratchet wheel 62 are mounted. The tooth space movement of the ratchet wheel 62 corresponds with the distance from one row of pins 51 to a next adj acent'row of pins 51.
On the outer end of the pin 78, a finger piece 85 is, formed by meansof which the pawl 73 may be raised independent of the. pawl '60 and thereby permit the carriage C to be shifted independent of the ratchet mechanism.
For permitting the carriage C to travel uninterruptedly a greater distance than one tooth. space of the ratchet wheel 62, the
mechanism now to be described has been provided- This mechanism is connected to i the key '11 marked X. The bell crank 26,

From the foregoing it will be-seen that whenever a key .X is depressed, the arm 87 will coeperate with the arm 90 to rock the shaft 91 and therebythe arm 93 to raise/the plate 95, and by means ofthe pin 103. on the .117 will be positione plate 95 raise the pawl 73v to release the ratchet wheel 62 and thereby permit the carriage C to be actuated by the spring'68.
To anchor the plate 95 in this ratchet wheel releasing position, a lever 98,.having a cam face 104, is pivoted 'toa li 97'integral with. and turned at right ang es with the plate 95. The cam face 104-coiiperates with the plate 105 (Fig. v3) secured to the extension 96 to lock the-plate 95 in its raised 'osition until the'l'ever 98 is rocked away from the plate 95v against the tension of the spring 100, whereupon the .cam face 104 Wlll be moved off the'plate 105 and ermit the plate .95 to be drawn downwardly y the spring 77 of the pawl 73. Thecam face 104, as shown in Figs. 5 and 8, has a lateral cam face 106 receding from the plate 105. in a downward I direction and a front cam face 107 receding from the late 95 in a downward direction.
The cam ace 106 merely provides clearance between the end of the extension 96 and the cam face 104, and the cam face 107 coiiperates with the plate 105 to facilitate the upv ward travel of the cam face 104 onto the plate 105, as well as the rapid release of the cam face 104 from'the plate 105.
In order to provide for the predetermined arrest of the carriage C when released by the actuation of the plate 95, thefollowing arrangement has been rovided Extending upwardly from the rai 44 are uprights 108 to the upper ends of which is secured the notched bar l10.having the lugs 111 and 112 extending upwardly therefrom and supported between them the rod 113. On the rod'113 are secured the stopping plates 114 which are provided with an elongated slot 115, a finger engaging piece 116 and a stopping pr0]ecti0n 117 (Fig. 3). When the plates 114 are disposed out of stopping position, they are placed as shown in Fig. 3 with their finger engaging piece 116 extending upwardly. On. the other hand when disposed in stopping position they are placed with their finger engaging piece 116 extending laterally and their stopping projection 117, disposed in one of the notches 118 of the notched bar .110 and extending downwardly in which position, obviously, a portion o the slot 115 will be disposed free below the rod 113 and in the path of the pin 102 of the Ill bracket or lever 98. When-a. plate 114 is disposed in stopping dposition, its-projection in the path of move ment of the pin 102 (Figs. 5. and 8) when the plate 95 is anchored" in raised position. Thus whenever a. plate 114 is disposed in stopping position and the carriage C is released by the depression of the key X, the
carriage C will travel until its pin 102 strikes a plate 114, whereupon the carriage will be.stopped and simu taneously therewith the lever 98 rocked to permit the pawl 73 to be released into ratchet wheel engaging position. The notches 118 furthermore are positioned to aline with the pins 51 so as to position the carriage C for properly setting a pin 51 in the row of pins to which the carriage U will have been moved when released and subsequently stopped by one of the stopping plates 114. The slot 115 Will permit the elevation of its plate should the carriage C be positioned, after a successive tooth space movement, with its plate 95 directly under the plate 114, and thereby permit the plate 95 to be raised, if at such position, it weredesired to release the carriage C for an extended travel.
From the foregoing it will further be seen that the extended travel will only take place when the X key is depressed, which likewise sets 11 pin, but obviously this could be arranged so that any other numbered pin would be simultaneously set, or no pin at all, in which latter case a separate key would, of course, be required.
To limit the rearward and forward movement of the carriage C, the stops 119 and 120 are provided at the rear and front ends, respectively, of the rail 44, thereby cooperating with the rollers 39 and 41, respectively, to so limit the travel of the carriage C.
It is obvious that various changes and modifications may be made to the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of the invention.
I claim 2- 1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a support; setting members thereon; keys movably mounted on said support; a carriage movable on said support relative to said keys; and bendable flexible connections each comprising a pair of relatively movable parts, one of said parts being operatively connected to said keys and setting members, the other of said parts being secured to said support and carriage respectively.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a support; setting members thereon; keys movably mounted on said support; a carriage movable on said support relative to said keys; and bendable flexible connections each comprising a pair of relatively movable parts, one of said parts being operatively connected to said keys and setting members, and free from connection with support or carriage, the other of said parts being secured to said support and carriage respectively and free from connection with said keys and setting members.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a frame; a carriage movable thereon: setting members carried on the carriage; keys movably mounted on said frame; and flexible connections each comprising an outer flexible wire and an inner flexible casing, forming relatively movable parts, said wires being operatively connected at opposite ends with said keys and said setting members and free from connection with said frame or said carriage, the opposite ends of the casings being secured to'said frame and said carriage respectively and free from connection with said keys or setting members.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination of a frame; a carriage movable thereon; setting members carried on the carriage; keys movably mounted on said frame; and flexible connections each cornprising a pair of relatively longitudinally movable flexible parts, one of said parts being operatively connected at opposite ends with said keys and setting members respectively and free from connection with said frame or carriage, the opposite ends of the other of said parts being secured to said frame and carriage respectively and free from connection with said keys for setting members.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination of a frame; a carriage movable thereon and yieldably drawn in one direction; setting members carried on the car riage; setting devices adapted to operate the setting members; an extension carried on the frame; keys movably mounted on said extension and correspondin .respectively with said setting devices; an flexible connections each comprising an outer flexible casing and an inner flexible wire forming relatively movable parts, said wires being engaged at opposite ends with said keys and said setting devices respectively and free from connection with said extension or carriage, the casings being secured to said extension and said terminal and free from connection with said keys or settin devices.

In a device of the character described, the combination of a frame; a carriage movable thereon and yieldably drawn in one direction; settable members carried on the frame; a terminal block carried on the earriage and provided with a plurality of cylindrical recesses; plunger pins slidable in a rocklng sha said recesses; bellcranks fulcrumed on said carriage and each provided with a lower armand an upper arm, the latter being engaged by one of said plunger pins; setting ro mechanism, when said arms are rocked; keys movably mounted on said frame; and flexible connections connecting said keys with said'plunger pins.
9. In a device of the character described, the combination ofa frame; a carriagemovable thereon; settable members carried on the frame; a universal rocking late; setting members adapted to set said settable members and to rock said rocking plate; and
an escapement for said carriage operatively connected to said rocking plate.
10. In a device of the character described, the combination of a frame; a. carriage movable. thereon; settable members carried on the frame; levers fulcrumed on said carriage; setting rods pivotally. connected to said levers and registering with said settable members; means for actuating said bell-cranks; a rocking shaft mounted on said carriage; a universal plate carried on said rocking shaft and adapted to'be engaged by said levers; and an escapement mechanism for said carriage operated by said rock shaft. 7

In a device of the character described, the combination of a frame; a carriage movable thereon; settable members carried on the frame; bellcranks fulcrumed on said carriage, and each provided with a lower and upper arm; setting rods pivotally connected to said lower arm and registering with said settable member's; means for actuating said bellcranks; a rocking shaft mounts ed on said carriage; a universal plate carried on said I'OOlflIlgShiLft and adapted to be engaged by any one of said lower arms; a rack carried on said frame; a ratchet Wheel mounted on said carriage and provided with a pinion engaging said rack; and pawls carried on said rocking shaft and engaging said ratchet wheel. p

In a device of the character described, the combinatlon of a frame; a carriage movable thereon and yieldably drawn in one direction;settable members carried on said frame;-setting means for setting said settable members; a rocking shaft mounted on said carriage and operated by' said setting means; a ratchet wheel mounted on said carand provided w1th a pinion thereon; a;

In a devlce of the character described, the combination of a frame; a carriage mounted thereon; a rocking shaft carried on said carriage; a ratchet wheel carried on the carriage and operatively connected to the frame; a hook awl carried on said shaft and engaging t e ratchet wheel; a detent pawl loosely mounted on said shaft and en gaging the ratchet wheel; a pivotal plate pivoted to said carriage and adapted to 11ft said detent pawl; a bracket pivotally secured to said pivotal plate and provided with a projection adapted to engage over a rtion of said frame when the pivotal plate is raised; means for raising said plate; and a plurality of stops adjustable along the path of said brac et and adapted to be moved into or out of said path.

In a device of the character described, the combination of a frame; a carriage mounted thereon; an escapement mechanism for said carriage comprising a means for releasing the escapement; a ivotal member pivoted to said carriage an adapted when operated to operate sald releasing means; a bracket mounted on said pivotal member and adapted to engage over a portion of said carriage to hold the pivotal member in operated position, and provided with a forward pro ection; means for operating said member; and a stop adjustable along the path of said bracket and adapted to be moved into or out of said path and adapted when contacted by said forward projection to push said bracket out of engagement with said part to permit the pivotal member to move into inoperative position.

In a device of the character described, the combination of a frame; a carriage mounted thereon; settable members carried on the frame; a rocking shaft carried on said carriage; setting means for setting said members and rocking said shaft; a ratchet wheel carried on the carriage and operatively connected to the frame; a hooked pawl fixed on'said rocking shaft and engaging the teeth of the ratchet wheel; a detent pawl loosely mounted on said rocking shaft and engaging said teeth and provided with an operating pin; a shoulder plate mounted on said carriage; a pivotal plate pivoted to said carriage and provided with a lifting in engaging under said operating pin; a racket pivotally mounted on the lower part of said pivotal plate and provided with a forwardly projecting arm projecting forwardly of the pivotal plate, and with a cam projection adapted when the pivotal plate is raised to engage over said shoulder plate; a lifting shaft; a lifting arm mounted on said lifting shaft and engaging under said ivotal plate; a sto bar carried on said rame; and a plurality of stopping plates slidably mounted on said bar and pivotally movable into and out of the path of said forwardly projecting arm.
19. In a device of the character described,
the combination of a pair of relatively movable parts; an escapement mechanism for said parts; a device carried on one of said parts for releasing the escapement; a notched bar carried on the other of said parts and provided with a air of lugs and a plurality of notches; a ongitudinal rod mounted between said lugs; and a plurality of stopping plates pivotally and slidably mounted on said horizontal rod and adapted to be moved into said notches and the path of said device for operating the device.
20. In a device of the character described,
the combination of a frame; a carriage mounted thereon; an escapement mechanism for said carriage comprising a means for re leasing the escapement; a movable member movably mounted on said carriage and adapted when moved to operate said releasin means; a bracket mounted on said movebIe member and adapted to engage a part of said carriage to hold the pivotal member in operative position, and provided with a forward pro ection; means for operating said member; a notched bar carried on said frame and provided with a pair of lugs and a plurality of notches; a longitudinal rod mounted between said lugs; and a plurality of stopping plates pivotally and slidably mounted on said horizontal rod and adapted to be moved into said notches and the path of said forward projections 21. A device of the character described comprising a frame, a plurality of settable pins disposed in said frame, a support, keys movably mounted on said support, a carriage mounted to travel across said settable pins, setting means mounted on said carriage, flexible connections between said keys and said setting means, casings connected to and between said carriage and said support in which said flexible connections are disposed, pins secured to the ends of said flexible connectionsextending to said carriage and operatively disposed to actuate said setting means, and rigid wires secured to said keys and operatively disposed to contact with the other ends of said flexible connections and thereby actuate said flexible connections.
22. A device of the character described comprising a frame, a plurality of settable pins disposed in said frame, a support, keys mo vably mounted on said support, a carriage mounted to travel across said settable pins, setting means mounted on said carriage, flexible connections between said keys and said setting means, casings connected to and between said carriage and said support in which said flexible connections are disposed, pins secured to the ends of said flexible connections extending to said carriage and operatively disposed to actuate said setting means, rigid wires secured to said keys and operatively disposed to contact with the other ends of said flexible connections and means in initial connections to in turn thereby actuate said flexible connections, and means for normally maintaining said setting position and thereby also said flexible connections in initial position.
23. A device of the character described comprising a stationary support, keys movably mounted on said support, acarriage, setting means mounted on said carriage, flexible connections between said keys and said setting means, spacing mechanism on said carriage, and connecting means between said setting means and said spacing mechanism so that said spacing mechanism will be actuated whenever said setting means is actuated thereby to advance said carriage a unit space. v
24. A device of the character described,
comprising a frame, s'ettable means on said" frame, a support, keys on said support, flexible connections reciprocatably mounted between said 'settable means and said keys, the actuation of said keys actuating said actuate said settable means, and casings secured to said frame and said support in which said connections are slidably mounted, the connections not being connected to either said frame or suport.
