Abstract

294,354. Frõnkl, M. June 22, 1927. Cooling gases, tubular apparatus for; rime, removing.- In apparatus for drying air for blast furnaces and other gases by refrigerating, reversible cold regenerator chambers e<1>, e<11> are arranged in front of and behind the evaporator of a refrigerating machine and are adapted to be changed over so that each chamber in turn takes up cold from the dried gas and then returns this cold to the incoming moist gas. The regenerator chambers may be filled with metal strips, and after one chamber has been heated to atmospheric temperature by the incoming gas, further gas is admitted in order to dry off the condensed moisture and avoid moistening the dried gas on reversal. Compressed ammonia gas passes alternately at h<1> or h<11> into one or the other of the devices a/b or b/a which act alternately as condenser and evaporator. From the condenser b/a, the liquefied ammonia passes through a throttle valve d into the evaporator a/b. The moist air, entering at f<1>, flows through the regenerator chamber e<1>, where some of the moisture condenses and freezes on the metal strips, and passes by pipe 1<1> to the evaporator a/b where the rest of the moisture is removed. The dried air then passes by pipe 2<11> to the regenerator chamber e<11> where it lowers the temperature of the strips and leaves at f<11>. When the chamber e<1> has attained atmospheric temperature and has been dried, the air valves are reversed by a compressed air or electrical timing device g<1> so that the moist air enters the chamber e<11> and the dried air leaves through the chamber e<1>. The change-over for the evaporator and condenser, by a timing device g<11>, takes place earlier than reversal of the air valves to allow time for the cooling off of the condenser and the freezing of the residual moisture. Melted rime and moisture is withdrawn at k<1>, k<11>, p<1>, p<11>. In a modification, the refrigeration is continuous in an evaporator in two parts alternately sprayed with brine or lye for removal of rime, the part undergoing spraying being that part adjacent to the discharging regenerator cham. ber. The brine or lye is concentrated and reused.
