Abstract
167,725. Eustis, A. H. May 4, 1920. Drying gases.-Moist sulphur dioxide gas is dried by passage through pumps, which are maintained at a temperature high enough to prevent condensation, and coolers made of non-corrodible material, the last traces of water being removed by injection of liquid sulphur dioxide spray and condensation. As shown, the gas extracted in a chamber 16 passes by a pipe through refrigerators or surface coolers 21, wherein it is cooled by brine, to a vacuum pump 24a provided with a steam jacket 27<a>. The gas from this pump is cooled in a cooler 26<a> made of lead &c., from which condensed moisture is drawn off into a valved trap or receptacle 26<d>, and passes through like pumps 24b, 24<c> and intercoolers 27<b>, 27<c> to a cooling chamber 30 wherein most of the remaining moisture is cooled out and withdrawn through a pipe 30<a>. The cooled dry gas is withdrawn from this chamber, compressed in a compressor 32, passed to a condenser 33, and stored in liquid form in a receiver 34. Between the compressor and condenser a trap 35 is interposed containing liquid sulphur dioxide which extracts the last traces of moisture. The trap contains broken coke &c., and is cooled by a coil 35<b>. The liquid sulphur dioxide collecting in the trap may be blown back through a valve-controlled pipe 36 into the chamber 30 wherein it expands, producing a refrigerating effect. Specification 168,627, [Class 1 (ii), Inorganic compounds, other than &c.], is referred to.
