Abstract

294,061. Standard Telephones & Cables, Ltd., (Western Electric Co., Inc.). Dec. 31, 1927. Thermionic generators. -In a crystal-controlled oscillator, a number of crystals are connected in series with a view to the reduction of the voltage across each crystal; and constancy of frequency under temperature variations is secured by cutting some of the crystals parallel, and others perpendicular, to a natural face, or by other suitable matching of the crystals. The crystals may be independent of each other and may have the same or different natural frequencies. As shown in Fig. 2, a single crystal slap 1<1> is mounted between four pairs of electrodes 8 which are so wired to each other that the four sections of the crystals are connected in series. The whole is connected across the grid and filament of a valve 0 having an inductance or tuned circuit 2 in its plate circuit coupled to a load Z. Grid bias may be applied from a battery 4 through a shunted grid leak 5 and a choke coil 6. The crystal is stated to react as an inductance at the working frequency, and this inductance in combination with the output coil or circuit 2 and the inter-electrode capacity constitutes the main oscillatory circuit.
