Hand-wheels. - The aluminium or other softmetal boss of a steering or other hand-wheel is provided with a cast-in steel or other hard liner. The liner, Fig. 6, has integral or welded-on external ribs 5 and a key-way 6 for engagement with the steering-column &c., and may be a casting or formed of tubing. The liner may have V-shaped circumferential or helical ribs integral therewith or secured thereto (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown), and may be of non-circular internal section. Fig. 8 shows a collar 16 welded &c. to a square tube 15, and Fig. 9 a square tube 17 with pressed-up bridge-pieces 18, which may alternatively be arranged transversely. In another form, the liner has longitudinal rectangular flutings (Fig. 10, not shown). A tubular liner may have outwardly-flared ends (Fig. 6, not shown) or a central circumferential bulge (Fig. 7, not shown). More than one keyway may be provided, and the liner may be tapered.
