1 Claim.
The present invention relates to metallic piling.
An object or this invention is to provide a metallic pile made from preformed relatively light gage sections.
Another'object is to provide a piling shell possessingsumcient strength to withstand the driva ing iorce necessary to position the pile in place.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent as the description proceeds, in which: Figure 1 is a sectional elevationoi the' present invention showing the piercing point and driving ring inzposition;
manner of forming the piling shell;
Figure 4 is a section on the line IV-IV of H8- llle Figure 5 is an elevational view similar to Figure 20 .1 but showing the piling shell tapered;
Figure 6 is a'top plan view of Figure 5; and
Figure '7 is a section on the line VII-VII oi Figure 6. I
In the drawing, the metallic piling includes pre- 25 formed complementary sections 2 01 any desired crow-sectional shape, suitably welded, in any conventional manner, along their edges." Under the present invention, light gage materials are preformed, as'desired, by an ordinary cold rolling- 30 process. These preformed complementary sec 'tions 2 are provided with reenforcing ribs 3 ex-j tending longitudinally from one end of said piling shell to the other while, if desired, transverse reenforcing ribs 4 may be provided intermediate 35 oi the longitudinal ribs, as shown in Fig-' ure tions 2 may be provided with laterally'extendedflanges I, as shown in Figures 3 and 4, in which case the welding of said sections along the contact surface of said flanges may be accomplished by 5 the conventional spot-welding method; In either I 7 case, the preformed complementary sections 2 are assembled into a unitary shell to whichls secured, upon one end, a piercing point 6.
The piercing point is p reierably a cast member.
Figure 2 is a section on the line 11-11 of Figure Figure 3 is an elevational view showing another having a tapered conical point in order to provide a self-centering actionv during driving of said piling shell into proper position. An annular flange I is provided upon the inner wall of said piercing point to support and retain said comple- 5 mentary sections forming the piling shell upon said point 8. The ends of said complementary sections are welded, in any conventional manner. to the piercing point 6.
In forming the piling shell from relatively light 10 gage stock, it is necessary to protect the top edges of said-complementary sections during the driving of said piling shell into proper position. In order that'the piling shell will withstand the impulses received during driving, a metallic ring I is in- 15 serted within the inner wall of said piling shell and provided with a flange 9 extending laterally to a point slightly beyond the ribs 3. This ring: maybe welded, in any conventional manner, to the end 0! said piling shell. I
There is shown a straight cylindrical piling shell in,Flgures 1 and 3. If desired, the piling shell may be tapered toward the piercing point 6, as shown in Figure 5.
' While I have shown and described speciilcem I bodiments oi the present invention, it will be understood that I do not wish to be limited exactly; 1
thereto, since various modifications may be made' without departing from the scope of the invention, as defined by the following claim.
' I claim: v 1 a v A tubular metallic pile comprising a'plurality oi! complementary arcuate sections welded together to provide a hollow chamber. said arcuate sections providedwith spaced longitudinally ar 35 ranged reinforcing corrugations and transverse corrugations between certain of said longitudinal corrugations, a piercing point welded to the bot-- tom, portion'o; said hollow chamber and an annular protective driving ring welded to the upper portion of said hollow chamber and positioned within the bore thereof and including a laterally extending flange extending over the top edge-oi said pile and terminatingin substantial align ment with said corrugations whereby said pile '45 withstands the impact oi the blows during driving or said pile in position.
