Abstract

287,716. Aspinall, F. March 28, 1927. Guarding against unauthorized use.- The steering wheel is rendered useless by interrupting the connection between the steering column and worm. A tube 7 inside the column 1 is formed with a thread 12 on which works a sleeve-nut 13 formed with radial teeth 14. The lower end of the column is castellated and the inner surface of the worm 2 is formed d with corresponding recesses. In the working position shown the column and worm are connected by the teeth 14. If the tube 7 is turned by means of a handle 10 the sleeve 13 descends until the teeth 14 occupy an annular recess 15 in the worm and the connection is broken. A lock may be fitted in the hub 24 of the wheel 3 to lock the column and tube in this position. In a modified construction, the nut 13 works inside the tube 7 and is formed with two sets of external teeth.
