Abstract
293,579. Weilbach, E. C. July 29,1927. Sounding - apparatus.- Apparatus of the pressure type comprises a measuring chamber of varying cross-sectional area formed between two tubes arranged one within the other and rigidly connected together, the inner tube being marked with a measuring scale and being provided at its lower end with an aperture for the admission of water and at its upper end with an inwardly-directed outflow tube allowing water to overflow into the measuring chamber. The apparatus consists of a conical metal inner tube 9 within a cylindrical glass tube 6 which is enclosed within a metal tube 1 and is secured by caps 4, 5 and gaskets 7, 8. The tube 1 is provided with reading-apertures 1<a>. The lower end 10 of the tube 9 is open to admit water and passes through a threaded projection 14 of the cap 5. A. closure 16 carrying a hollow handle 17 screws over the extension 14 and bears on a gasket 18. To prevent collection of air within the handle a hole 24 is provided which communicates with the tube 9. At its upper end the tube 9 is formed with an inwardly directed tube 12 through which water flows into the space 23 between the tubes 6, 9. To empty the collected water, the closure 16 is removed, when the water leaves through passages 13 passing through the cap 5.
