Counting-apparatus. - In a meter which registers consumption above a predetermined rate, this rate is variable in accordance with the time of day. A worm-wheel 23, driven by the meter, is connected through a total-consumption counting-train, with one of a pair of sunwheels (not shown), the other of which is driven from a constant-speed shaft 6. The excess-consumption counting-train is driven by means of a planet-wheel engaging both sunwheels and rotating at a rate proportional to the difference of the rates of the sun-wheels. In order to enable the limit of registration to be varied, a plurality of transmission gears are provided between the, constant-speed shaft 6 and the sun-wheel driven thereby, which transmission gears can be alternatively brought into operation. The shaft 6, in the construction shown, is movable laterally so that a pinion 7 carried thereby may be brought alternatively into gear with pinions 8, 9 carried by shafts 10, 13, which are geared to the sun-wheel through gear trains 11, 14 having different velocity ratios. The shaft 6 is mounted in a bearing on an arm 16 of a lever 18, which can be rocked about a shaft 17. A pin 19 on, the lever 18 rests against an arm 20 of the armature 21 of a relay 22. When this relay is de-energized, the pinions 7, 8 are held in engagement by the weight of the armature 21. When the. relay is energized, the armature 21 releases the lever 18, the weight of which causes engagement of the pinions 7, 9. The relay 22 may be actuated by a clock or by the meter, or may be replaced by a manually operated mechanical device for changing the transmission gear.
