Portable type-lever machines.-An action, particularly for portable machines, of the kind comprising type-levers pivoted on a vertical segment and having pin-and-slot engagement with intermediate levers pivoted on a concentric segment is arranged in the following manner, chiefly for the purpose of reducing the vertical and frontto-rear dimensions of the machine :-Short typelevers g, Figs. 1 and 3, are pivoted on a vertical segment f and have slots g<1> engaging pins m<1> on radial intermediate-levers m pivoted on a concentric segment k and connected by links t to bell-cranks o having forwardly-extending arms o<1> carrying key-stems r which are guided vertically by apertures in a stepped plate s. The bell-cranks are pivoted on a rod n' at the bottom of the machine, and are arranged beneath the type-lever rest i. The arms o<1 >are arranged in sets of four which are of graded lengths corresponding to the positions of the four banks of keys. The arms o<2> to which are connected the links t are, as shown in Fig. 3, arranged in sets of four graded lengths corresponding to the lengths of the arms o<1>; moreover, to compensate for the arcuate arrangement of the levers m, the sets of arms o<2> are graded in length from the centre to the sides of the machine. To provide room for the type-levers, the distance between them increases from the centre to the sides of the segment, and the travel of the outer type-levers is greater than that of the central type-levers, the outer levers m being arranged to travel further than the inner levers m so as to increase the travel of the outer levers. To render uniform the initial angles between the levers m and the slots g<1>, the slots are formed at the bottom with steep parts g<2> which receive the pins m<1> of the outer levers m. Returning-springs p, Fig. 1, are connected to lugs o<3> on the arms o<2> and lugs n<3> on the support n of the rod n'. The support r and segment k are connected at the middle by a stay u.
