Abstract
292,581. Waterbury Tool Co., (Assignees of Crain, J. J.). June 24, 1927, [Convention date]. Borehole apparatus. - Rotary apparatus for drilling wells &c., with means whereby the rate of feed is governed automatically by the resistance encountered by the drill, is driven by an electric or other motor through a plurality of hydraulic gear units. As shown, hydraulic gear units 15, 24, 28, are connected by a pipe system 26, 27, 29, 30, the unit 28 being driven by a motor 32 to act as a pump, the unit 15 acting as a motor and driving the rotary table 12 which drives the drill, and the unit 24 being connected to a winch 22 from which the drill rods are suspended; when the resistance to rotation increases, the unit 24 acts as a motor to raise the drill, while when. the resistance to rotation is small, the rate of feed increases, the. unit 24 being then driven by the winch and acting as a pump. The units 15, 24, 28 are preferably of the Waterbury type comprising a rotary barrel mounted on a shaft and containing cylinders parallel to the axis of the shaft, the cylinders containing pistons connected to a rotating swash plate. The swash plate of the unit 28 is adjusted by a shaft 31 to vary the output, and that of the unit 24 by a shaft 25 to balance the weight of the drill &c. or to drive the winch to hoist the drill.
