In a drill rig the pressure and torque exerted on the bit are co-related control factors regulating the descent of a drill bit in a borehole. A hoist winch 8 drives or is driven by a hydraulic pump-motor unit. Lowering of the drill string can occur if the unit 11 can act as a pump and circulate liquid past valves 16 and 18. The position of valve 16 is regulated by the torque conditions experienced by the bit by either the swingably mounted reduction gear 29 of the rotary table 4 operating a piston in a cylinder 35 connected by line 27 to the chamber 15 of valve 16 or by an electro magnet associated with the power supply of an electric motor driving the bit, the magnet regulating a piston 38 in a cylinder 39 connected by said line 27 to said chamber 15. The valve 18 is manually set to a predetermined pressure. The pumpmotor unit 11 is driven if the valve 16 interupts the return flow, circuit 24, 22 of a continuously driven pump 23 causing diversion of liquid under pressure from the pump 23 through valve 26 and line 14 to unit 11. An alternative is for a build up of pressure in line 27 to operate piston cylinder unit 40 to close switch 41 of motor 43 to drive reduction 10 of winch 8.
