Abstract

215,563. Mangnall, A. R. May 3, 1923. Bore-hole apparatus.-In earth-boring apparatus wherein a pilot head is forced through the ground to bore by displacement, means are provided whereby the direction or alignment of boring may be controlled at will from the boring pit. The pilot bar a, carrying pilot heads b, c, is rotatably connected to a fitting d connected to the boring rods k and comprising a hydraulic cylinder and plunger i; the fitting is surrounded by a shell carrying an indicating lamp h. In operation, the lamp h is aligned with a fixed telescope and when deviation is indicated, the fitting is turned as desired and water supplied, as by flexible hose, to cause the plunger to engage the shell to apply a counteracting force. The controlling device may be applied near the head c and a number of plungers may be provided to permit control without rotation of the device.
