Driving arrangements.-The rolls 11 of a paper calendering machine are driven by hydraulic variable speed transmission gear comprising a pump 21 and a motor 18, conduits 19, 20 connecting the pump and the motor, the shaft 17 of the latter carrying a pinion 16 in mesh with a spur gear 15 on the shaft 13 of a calender roll. The motor and pump are similar, but inclination to the normal of the tilting box 28 for the swash plate 27 of the pump is variable, thus allowing the calendering machine to be driven at any requisite speed between that required for threading the paper through the rolls and its maximum. A hand wheel 42 acting through bevel gears 40, 37, 38 effects this adjustment, the stroke of the pistons 25 and the amount of fluid delivered by the pump to drive the motor 18 being thus regulated. The electric motor 35 is coupled at 36 to the shaft 22 of the pump 21. By the opening of a bye-pass valve 43 between pipes 19, 20, which valve is operable by a rod 45 and lever 46, the drive may be shut off instantly and the machine stopped.
