Abstract

291,052. Muller, J. May 25, 1927, [Convention date]. Tanks.-A method of and apparatus for automatically cutting off the supply of liquid to reservoirs &c., such as the petrol reservoir 1, Fig. 1, as they become full comprises a filling tube 7 which is closed at its lower end and provided with lateral openings 10 over which slides a tubular valve 17 operated by a float 24. In use, a cover 11 with spring-pressed closure disc 13 secured by bayonet fitting 12 is removed and the tube 7 connected to the filling means. When the liquid reaches the predetermined height the float stem 23 abuts on the guide stem 19 of the valve and shuts off the supply. When the filling valve is disposed at the bottom of the reservoir the float operates through a cord, or for side filling through cords and levers. The float may be fixed to the valve, or it may have pins operating in inclined curved grooves in the valve to give a rotary movement. An easy movement is required between the valve and the tube and to ensure fluid-tightness at the completion of the filling, the openings ;nay be closed by a pair of discs or pump plungers forced over the openings by an interposed spring. An arrangement with a filling funnel is shown in Fig. 7 in which the funnel neck 55 terminates in a flange 56 and carries a sliding cap 58 which is secured by a bayonet fastening 59 on the filling tube 7 when the cover 11, Fig. 1, is removed. The flange 56 with interposed washer 60 is pressed by the enclosed spring fluid tight against the top of the tube 7. The neck of the funnel is normally closed by a manually operated valve 54. This funnel allows, as soon as filling is completed, of the removal of the excess of liquid remaining in the filling apparatus.
